On my daily commute I drive by a massive structure that was apparently once a school. This is on Van Dyke about 3 blocks north of Gratiot right near Kettering HS. I am unable to make out the name, but it appears to have the word "Post" etched in the limestone. It looks like a miniature version of old Eastern High School. What's the story of this structure?

It's the old Rose Elementary School. The Board built a new Rose Elementary School several blocks to the NW of the old building, further into the neighborhood. The new Rose was a state of the art (for the 1970's) school with a large central library/media center off of which opened the classrooms.

The Board sold the old Rose decades ago. At one point it was a private Black Muslim school, something like Sister Clara ..., IIRC.

The new Rose Elementary was closed several years ago due to declining enrollment in the area and, I believe, the building was sold.

That makes sense to me, Reddog289. Patrick thought the inscription read "Post", so it is easy to see how time has eroded some of the letters. Stay tuned for an old photo I have around here somewhere of the school back in the 40's.
