After reading articles like these I hope that Illitch is putting some thought into a new stadium. The kind of buzz and interest that a new stadium would bring to his team is sorely needed now. The Joe is great but very dated and in need of a replacement. The best franchise in Detroit, in terms of championships, deserves its best stadium. Imagine a place with the same amenities of CoPa, interior awe of Ford Field, and flashiness of the Palace, but for the Wings! Yo Mike, get your team busy and give us a new Olympia NOW!! |

Ask yourself, "How much money are you willing to pay for it." Mikey isn't going to do it all on his own. |

On saturday, seeing all of the red wings fans walking down the riverwalk, I kind of changed my opinion on the arena issue. I don't really give a shit whether they build new or not. Both building new or renovating the Joe will both have their own pros/cons. The one thing I would like to see is the streets reconfigured to make it more walkable and easier to expand cobo over. |

you'll be sorry when the new arena does not have the same great views as Joe Louis Arena |

I would not have a problem keeping The Joe, but I think for it to be worthwhile it would require about a $100M overhaul, including efforts to open it up more to the riverfront with an atrium or something like that. I think for the amount it would cost to really bring things up to date, Mr. Illitch might as well build a new barn. FWIW, I would not be surprised at all if we hear something about the future of hockey rinks in Hockeytown during this possible championship week. |

Detroitstar, I'd think if Ilitch has something about ready the best time to announce it would be after the last game of the Stanley Cup. From the posts of last year, I'd assume THIS is the year Ilitch needs to make a decision one way or the other. |

Jeez, I didn't have any problems with the old Olympia. Detroit needs things of much higher priority than a new hockey rink. |

(with sarcasm) What's the matter with you Ray1936, don't you know that casinos and stadiums are going to save the city? We can't be building such useless things as houses! |

Houses will not be bought by a jobless populace. While the entertainment industry isn't as strong as manufacturing it is something. Aside from this our downtown could use some new activity, especially along the river front. Get rid of the Joe and expand Cobo. Make a new Wings stadium behind the Fox and create a year round entertainment district. Also, get rid of Kwame! |

Let's just hope they can hire an architect that has an inkling of imagination. I think we set a precedence in Stadium building when we built Ford Field. We integrated it into existing structures. I don't think the Illitches get that spirit of Detroit. They still just love tearing things down, instead of working with them. Maybe i should be blaming the engineers for a complete lack of imagination and that there is nobody with enough balls to stand up to them. Maybe i should be watching the wings kick the holy crap out of Pittsburgh. |

"Houses will not be bought by a jobless populace." True, but Detroiters with jobs are leaving the city proper to live in the suburbs. Build new subdivisions in the city and Detroiters with jobs will move to these new subdivisions instead of the suburbs. And maybe even suburbanites will move in. "our downtown could use some new activity" So could our residential neighborhoods! |

I'm still betting my money on the new arena being built where the old projects were just torn down, across from Motor City Casino. Personally, I'd love to see it go there, expanding the reaches of downtown a bit up Grand River. Hopefully leading to renovation of a few buildings along the stretch in the process. |

Who funds the project is the huge issue here. There is a whole site dedicated to the fact that Owners take city's, county's and states for a ride while barely putting anything up them selves, yet the owners of the team reap most of the benefit. http://www.fieldofschemes.com/ |

don't rip down the joe. 1stly it is a very symbolic building for the area, and the people of Detroit. Add additional COBO conference space (they are all right next to ea. other), and turn it in to a new hall (a la Oakland Hall). |

I would bet serious money that Detroiters' reasons for moving to the suburbs have to do with things like crime, schools, and the ratio of taxes paid to city services received, rather than some burning desire on their part to live in a brand-new McMansion on a cul-de-sac. |
