It would be better if it were Saturday... with the Festival of the Arts in Midtown and later the Tigers game, an AM Saturday parade would be ideal. If it is Friday, parking will be limited because downtown employees will be taking up a lot of the available parking, and lots of people in metro Detroit will be at work and can't make the parade. |

Pretty sure every other victory parade has been on weekdays. People just skip work. But, I would like a Saturday parade, too. |

Friday = Office workers. Gistok, your points about the other points of cultural synergy are right on, but lunchtime Friday means everyone (myself perhaps included, ahem) pouring out of towers and work joints for extended lunch hours. No double dipping on an audience that will already be heading down. Jeez, wtf am i talking about?! GO WINGS!(and as the grandson of a newf, a hearty "well done, boy" to Dan Cleary) |

Don't let politics spoil a great celebration the Detroit Red Wings and their organization deserve. Hockey players are the humblest of athletes and they deserve an honorable parade and day. |

I'd say putting it on a weekday limits the number of non-fans who would bother coming down to rabble rouse the crowd. |

A lot of these players probably have their bags packed and plane tickets purchased to go elsewhere. They probably pack as many of these team functions in a short time period so the players and coaches can get on with whatever they have planned. Their summer will be short enough as is. Before you know it they'll be starting training camp for next season. |

Love the exclusionary approach that the parade is for "fans" only, like there is some sort of definitive sliding scale on which to measure how one qualifies as a fan. Good to see you've appointed yourself the one to judge who is acceptable to attend and who is not. It's called a bandwagon. People get on and off all of the time, and you can't police that, as much as you'd probably like to, mirrored shades and all. |

Of course Kwame will be there, he can't resist the chance to somehow take credit for this... wonder if he'll be in a plexiglas Popemobile-type vehicle in case people want to throw tomatoes? When he goes by, I plan to yell "Just go!" I encourage others to do the same. |

King, I was at the celebration when a million and a half marauding suburbanites came down to celebrate ten years ago. Even those who came early and started drinking never got beligerent...in ninety degree and better heat. I checked with the Detroit Police regarding that celebration and any altercations beforehand during the playoffs and finals...because Scott Simon from NPR radically dissed the Wings fans with some comment that they made wilding soccer fans look like they just left an afternoon at the Met. (had to do my research before sending off my scathing reply, laughing that he DID piss me off enough to jump my marathon training from the 7-mile plateau right through to the 10-mile one!) Naw...no worries about that...I was merely saying the non-fan drunks would be more at risk for bad behavior, and they would have more of a chance for that on Saturday than Friday if they're working. Any other reading of my words was putting another meaning to them than I intended and delivered. |

I went down to the Parade in 2002 and viewed it from the should-have-been-turned-on Heart Plaza fountain. Unfortunately I'm stuck at work tomorrow. had the parade been Monday, I probably could have taken the day off. We're bringing in a small tv to watch it from our cubes tomorrow. Is it just me, or is the weather blazing hot everytime the wings have a parade downtown? |

I plan to take the bus downtown (which, come to think of it, will have to be rerouted a bit for this) and watch somewhere around the Campus Martius area for as long as I can get away with before going to work. No parking or traffic hassles that way. Anyone who thinks there will be any problems wasn't there in '97, '98 and '02. Wings fans may drink and yell a lot, but they're good people. |

I was there after the win in 97 and 98. Good crowd, good celebration. And that wasn't the planned parade, that was the impromptu after-game frenzy. I don't forsee problems. Except having a sore hand from all the high fives. I remember in 98 I believe, people were gathered all around but the game wasn't over yet. I saw a crowd of people huddled together and went to take a look. One of the police officers stationed there had a hand held television, and was holding it out as far from him as he could so the crowd around him could watch the end of the game. Good times! |

Just remember that any lack of respect for the Mayor will be used by him to solidify the base of his constituency. You'll just be playing into his hands. Be respectful and celebrate the achievement of our hometown heroes. Let the other stuff pass. It won't be settled tomorrow. |

I bet that most of tomorrow's crowd could give a rats ass about him or his constituency. Sorry but respect is earned... and he's lost the respect of many Detroiters and almost all suburbanites by blaming others for his problems via the race card. A decent amount of booing will hopefully knock that overstuffed ego down a few notches. And if his constituency doesn't like it... who cares? Their minds are already made up, so there's no point in trying to placate them. |
