Butcher's Inn in Eastern Market. Saturday, November 8 was their last day in business. We were fortunate to have breakfast there one last time that morning. Don told us he would remain open that day until the last beer was sold! No word on whether the place has been sold yet. Thanks, Don!! Zeitgeist Gallery. Saturday, November 8 was their final gallery day, with a reception that night. Anybody attend? According to their website, they are auctioning off all remaining artwork this Saturday (http://www.zeitgeistdetroit.or g/). Thanks for 11 years of art and community!! Two places I'll miss.... |

Butchers was reopened by Don & co. in 2006 after being closed a few years. Man, I loved that John Sinclair burger! |

I know it won't happen, but I would love it if Evolution Labs took over that space and opened a full service Vegan restaurant. Their food is A-MAZING. |

I loved the fresh Corned Beef Hash at Butcher's!! And we enjoyed the staff there! Lots of great people!! I checked Abreact Theatre's website, and their current production is being done at the Gryphon Theatre above the Park Bar. |

I attended the Zeitgeist closing party and it was a blast. Lots of art, lots of friends and lots of fun. I've worked with the Abreact before and as of right now, they're looking to use the Gryphon. Keep checking the website. |

I missed the Zeitgeist closing party, strangely enough, because I was seeing the Abreact production at the Gryphon. I remembered later and was bummed, but you know what they say: You can't dance at every wedding. |

Sorry to hear about Butcher's Inn. That is a cool little spot. I never ate there though. I had no idea about the Corn Beef Hash. I'm on a never ending quest to find great Corned Beef Hash. The best CB Hash is from deli's who take the nub ends pieces of real corned beef brisket (boiled of course), real pastrami, and ham and grind it down with two passes through the food grinder (processor), two handfuls of the meat mix, chopped onions, green pepper, mixed with hash browns, grilled to nice crispy brown, no need for oil or butter (plenty of fat in the mix), two eggs over easy (no runny whites) and topped off with Jewish seedless rye - extra thick cut with plenty of butter. Breakfast heaven! I can't find that downtown. It's either hash from a can, or shavings of average to bad corn beef and some oil soaked soggy hash browns. Can anyone help a brotha out!? |

I'm not a big corned beef person, but have some friends who are. They have not had anything but positives to say about the corned beef hash at the Hygrade Deli (Michigan Ave. and Grand Blvd.). I like the other fare and the atmosphere (kind of what Cheers might be if it were alcohol free and in Detroit). Short hours - they close at 3 on weekdays, 2 on Saturdays and not open on Sundays. |

J-Stone, try the Russell Street Deli's Corned Beef Hash. BTW, did I see on another thread that your dad went to Austin Prep? If so, was his name Joel? |

The great thing about the Butcher's fresh CBH was that it wasn't very greasy! And so I was able to justify splurging whenever they had it on the menu. Their Breakfast Potatoes were pretty good too! Maybe we'll try the Hygrade Deli sometime. We've never tried Russell Street Deli since there's usually a line to get in. |

Zeitgeist closing sucks. I just sent them an email suggesting a more global auction via the web. As a collector of outsider art I can attest to the value of a lot of those art brut items they had on the walls that I used to drool over. It's great if locals can give them new homes, but for the benefit of the gallery, really, they should be auctioned via DuMouchelles on LiveAuction through ebay to get what they're worth. Maybe I'm just jealous that I can't be there at short notice to finally own some of that stuff. Grrr. Hope it all finds happy homes. I'll miss that place. Damn. |

carl's finally succumbed, eh? one might have thought that the economic prosperity promised by our local gaming industry - motor city casino in particular - would have provided a lifeline for the mausoleum to the highlife of detroit's movers and shakers. quelle dommage. |

I agree about Russell Street Corned Beef Hash. It is much better than farmer's restaurant's. I did a little review about farmer's. http://www.detroitarmy.com/sea rch?q=farmer%27s I dont like my CBH as ground as you appear to like though stone. Another place, although not in the city, which has great CBH is flytrap diner on woodward in ferndale. www.DetroitArmy.com |

Sorry, while i used to love Carl's, over the last 5 years, it has been a steady down hill ride. The place was absolutely falling apart and the food was barely par. They failed due to their own management. The location was and always has been prime. |

According to the Freep, Carl's has not closed, per se: "RESTAURANTS: Carl's is remodeling Carl's Chop House, a Detroit landmark since 1920, closed Oct. 12 to remodel the restaurant and restructure its menu, said Vince Passalacqua, whose father owns the restaurant. Carl's phones have been transferred to Mario's, an Italian restaurant in Detroit that the family also owns and that is honoring Carl's gift certificates. Carl's Chop House, 3020 Grand River Ave., near MotorCity Casino, has been known for its pricey steaks, chops, prime rib and Maine lobster. The new menu will feature lighter, more inexpensive fare, Passalacqua said. A date for a reopening hasn't been set but it will be after the holiday season, Passalacqua added." Maybe I'm just being naive believing that it will actually reopen eventually, but I'm staying optimistic for now... |

I've heard lots of complaints about Carl's over the past year. But went in May for my son's birthday. Food was just as good as I remembered, and wait staff and management very friendly and service-oriented. It's too bad it became so unpredictable. Yes, the carpet was a bit past prime, to say the least, but not a big deal to me. I wanted him to be able to say he'd been there, especially since, at the time, there were reports that it might become a "strip joint" and hence, a mother-son visit would never happen ;) I hope that's not where the "remodeling" is heading. |

I remember Peg Legs. I used to go there for the black bean soup and great waitstaff. It burned to the ground and I believe the owner was convicted of arson. Did anyone see the ridiculous property prices on the O'Connor website? $199,000.00 for the Zeitgeist? Who's tripping? |

I dated a member of the waitstaff. Yes, it was a good crew. Black bean soup was superb. There was often a jazz trio on weekends at Peglegs, and the owner also had a music bar, The Three Of Us/Motor City Showcase that featured Rock n Roll. |

Bobl, was the Three of Us located on 6 Mile west of Gratiot? If so, I spent many a beer soaked night there listening to local rock bands back in the late 70's. |
