The Free Press is reporting now the fire was deliberately set. No major surprise, but even more tragic.

Hopefully the arsonist will be caught and charged with murder.

The fire academy needs to rethink their stand on entering vacant buildings that are on fire. The brothers and sisters in the DFD shouldn't have to risk their lives for a vacant building that is doomed for the demolition ball anyway. They should surround and drown the fire, not take one step on the building. Why risk the lives of any member of the DFD to put out a fire in a vacant home?

I can't speak as an expert, because I am not a firefighter. But, isn't a burning house considered occupied until proven otherwise? Could there have been a squatter in there, and how would they know? The firefighter who died was a veteran and presumably knew what he was doing. Nothing is sorrier then a loss likes this one.
It is unlikely that the arsonist will be caught. This is a problem that has been going on far too long, at a price way too high.

Damn. An unnecessary death of a man who lived to save and protect us.

Rest in peace, Mr. Harris. And thank you. God Bless.

According to Lt Steve Kirshner who was interviewed on WXYZ channel 7. It sounded like the fire had already been contained and they were in there doing some "mop and clean up work" when part of the structure collapsed. Very tragic. God bless his family and the DFD. Thank you Firefighter Walter Harris.

Very tragic. May he rest in peace and his family and friends find comfort. My deepest respect goes out to him and all of those who put their lives on the line for our public safety.

Heaven has another angel from Detroit. RIP Walter Harris.

I hope there is not a day that goes by that the arsonist responsible is not tormented by what they did.

These brave men & women put up with so much in their day-to-day occupations that we almost take them for granted. May God protect them all and care for Mr. Harris' loved ones.

The soul of Senior Fire Fighter Walter Harris, as well as needs of his family, will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Does anyone know if funeral arrangements have been as of yet?

The rule should be: No firefighter should go into a building unless he/she is absolutely certain someone is inside and absolutely certain that they will not endanger themselves.

Retroit, How do you know that absolutely nobody is inside a dwelling? Unless you have xray vision that is impossible.

My dad said exactly what the other FFs are saying, "What a waste of a great guy". Detroit is one of very few depts that charge into burning buildings. Other depts fight from the outside (unless they have confirmation that people are trapped). DFD goes into vacant buildings all the time. What a shame.

Despite the comments made about the tactics of the Detroit Fire Department, the fact remains that a man lost his life fighting a fire that was deliberately set ! A reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for setting the fire.
