The health rankings came out with a 4 place improvement for Michigan's standing healthwise.

www.americashealthrankings.org

(pages 8, 13 and 56 in the report have the pertinent charts)

Tops in the nation is Vermont and the bottom of the barrel is Louisiana.

Michigan was ranked 2 percent above the national norm for overall health, (Vermont nearly 25% above the norm ! and Louisiana 15% BELOW the norm)

To put this into world perspective: Japan is the healthiest country with life expectancy at 75 years, while the USA ranks at 69 years of age (curiously grouped with Slovenia; Czech Republic and Portugal!)

The USA is ranked Number One in one category: Obesity

Just something to think about before you have that greasy chili dog tonight for dinner!

Interesting that the all the countries above us have national health care, yet we spend more per health care per capita than any other country.

That study left out an important variable.

What if a wise Detroiter is purchasing a healthy salad to go and he is shot dead by an armed robber- how is Michigan's health doing then? The shot/dead person will continue to lose weight so obesity is not an issue.

Perhaps this study is so encompassing that they figure in that the robber who is now eating salad is going to be healthy and live better!

Don't worry, I'm going to eat healthy and have a salad -- drenched in greasy ranch dressing. :-(
