Back when they were tearing down buildings and digging for the foundation of the Ren Cen, I remember hearing about lots of archaeological finds on the site. Does anyone know just what was found, or where there may be articles about this? On a side note...when they were tearing down buildings near the river, a big cement wrecking ball broke loose from the cable and landed on the car parked next to mine in a parking lot. I will never forget the face of the owner when she arrived at her flattened car after a long day at work. |

Great question, hopefully someone on this site can give some info. I have also heard that when they were digging I-375 at Eastern Market they unearthed some old graves from the cemetary that used to be on the site of Eastern. Someone told me it happened just pryor to the 67 riots, and because of all the mess going on they simply covered the bodies and laid down the freeway. Not sure how much was true, or if it was an urban legend. |

Somewhere in the deepest/darkest regions of my ever-calcifying brain....I remember something about a boat, or canoe; also a grave or two. |

This site mentions the amount of objects, but doesn't mention what specifically was unearthed http://www.byways.org/explore/ byways/13754/places/37186/ |

That was a great site Rjk. The smokestacks toppled over is representative of what is happening to the whole auto buisiness today. |

The only thing I could find on Johann George was that he arrived in Detroit in 1844. |

My neighbor has in front of his garage a huge pile of square-ish granite blocks. He has said he had permission to take them from the Ren Cen construction site. He says the stones comprised the old road that was there at the time. Some of the blocks have long, narrow channels that it is said were worn by streetcar rails. |

I saw this for him in 1880 living in Warren but was unsure because of the distance. His wife was named Catherine and there are children listed. I'm thinking it may be him, also. If we traced his children forward, we may find more info. |

When I was doing my undergrad degree in anthropology at Wayne State University in the late 1970s, I took a course in museology. One assignment was to create a museum display using the Anthropology Museum's collection as the focus. Among the collection are artifacts uncovered during excavation work prior to the construction of both the Pontchartrain Hotel and the Renaissance Center. Most of it was broken porcelain and small metallic artifacts. Undoubtedly there were larger pieces excavated, but we didn't see them. The Anthropology Museum might be the place to start for more information on this subject. |

I remember reading a Freep article when the RenCen was being built about artifacts being found, and other than shards it was mostly clay pipes. For tobacco, I presume. |

I think they found the bat cave, but left it undisturbed. Just paved over it. |

I believe the stones that currently pave West Canfield in the Historic District (i.e., between Second and Third) came from the RenCen site. |

Related, but not about Detroit. I was in London and visited the Tate Modern Art Museum. They had a whole room dedicated to a dig done on the banks of the Thames River. It happened to run right in front of the museum. There was a ton of junk there and a million clay pipes, all displayed in cases. I thought it was the best exhibit in the whole of the Tate. |

Here is the Wayne State Anthropology Museum web site. Click on the "Collection Summaries" link on the left side of that page to learn more. Here is the collection summary of what they found at their Ren Cen dig. |

Any remains of the oldest roadway along the river was from a 1700's street called "River Road". It predates Jefferson and Atwater. |
