DETROIT ABIDES: FREE HOLIDAY MOVIE IN EASTERN MARKET
Celebrate the Holidays with a community screening of It’s A Wonderful Life and
a poignant discussion on the economic crisis with a panel of local bankers.

Every 3rd Wednesday of the month, Great Lakes Bioneers Detroit, Detroit Evolution Laboratory and Eastern Market Corporation partner to present Detroit Abides. This free Sustainability Gathering celebrates the connections between health, the environment, agriculture, food security, the economy and our community. This month leads into our topic, the Economy, lightly with a free screening of the holiday classic It’s A Wonderful Life. After the film, Dan Carmody of Eastern Market will facilitate a discussion with a panel of local bankers on finances in an economic crisis. The screening will be on Wednesday, December 17th at 7 pm in Eastern Market’s heated Shed 5.

It's a Wonderful Life takes place in the fictional town of Bedford Falls shortly after World War II and stars James Stewart as George Bailey, who owns a savings and loan association that’s in turmoil. George’s imminent suicide on Christmas Eve gains the attention of his guardian angel, Clarence, who is sent to help him in his hour of need. Much of the film is told through flashbacks spanning George's entire life. Through these flashbacks we see all the people whose lives have been touched by George and the difference he has made to the community in which he lives.

Immediately after the screening Dan Carmody of Eastern Market will facilitate a panel discussion and question and answers for a panel of local bankers. Lorenzo Thurman of Detroit Micro-Enterprise Fund and John Schoeniger of Shore Bank Enterprise Detroit will be two of the panelists. Local non-profit groups and vendors will also be on hand to offer information and support. Urban Grounds Coffee will be open in the shed with hot beverages and Angela of Detroit Evolution Laboratory will offer a hot, healthy and hearty selection. This popular event has quickly become a relaxed meeting place for those working to create a sustainable Detroit.

Using a projector, large screen and PA system everyone will be able to relax and enjoy the film. Though some chairs will be provided, it is advised to bring a folding or camp chair. The screening is held in Eastern Market’s enclosed and heated Shed 5, but it is a large and airy space so sweaters and blankets are recommended too. The screening is open to the public and free. Shed 5 is located at the corner of Russell and Alfred. Parking is available in the lot adjacent to Shed 5.
