If this has been discussed previously, please re-direct.

What significant houses of famous people are still standing?

I know Lindburgh's house is gone, bur does anyone know where Danny Thomas' house was/is? I'm hoping some homes of the greats, mainly show biz, are still there.

I started thinking about this because according to this web site: http://www.muhammadspeaks.com/ MessengerHistory.html
Elijah Mohammad lived at 8474 Manhattan Street in Hamtramck in the late 20s to early 30s. And I have my Dad's childhood Missal (in Polish) with his address in it. It was 8489 Manhattan Street.

So apparently, Elijah Mohammad and dad were neighbors! I don't remember Dad saying anything about having an outhouse, though.

I'm thinking Manhattan Street must be under concrete as it is not on any map I can find.

Photographer Jerry Uelsmann grew up in the house at 15620 LaSalle. Artist Gilda Snowden grew up next door, at 15614 LaSalle. The Uelsmann's still lived there for a while when she was a little girl; Jerry had moved away to college. Gilda met him years later when he came to CCS as a visiting artist.

According to Coppola's bio, his family moved to New York from Detroit when he was only two years old. Can't really claim him as a Detroit resident.

Maybe it's been renamed. Either way, I'd like to know. Anyone have an old map of Hamtramck?

George C. Scott is credited with attending Redford High School. Anyone know where he might have hung his hat?

Ray,

George C. Scott and my father were in the same grade at Redford. Dad said he "was full of himself".

Dad's friend Rich is still alive. I could ask him if you really want to know.

Ty Cobb lived on Williams St. in 1913.

Albert Kahn designed his house, Mack Ave. and John R., now the Urban League office.

Joe Louis lived on Macomb St. He attended Duffied and Bronson Vocational Schools.
He worked for Pickman and Dean Ice Company at age 12. He could lift a 50 lb. block with ease.

His early training was at Brewster Rec. Ctr.

FFC would probably qualify as a B&G, born and gone. If you didn't go to school here...B&G. But it does mean something....you are a native Detroiter. And that you most likely have family here.

My mom was glad to hear about Joe Lewis. Big fan.

RE: Manhattan St., Hamtramck...thank you so much for the maps, Hornwrecker. I couldn't find them anywhere online....Beautiful!

Hornwrecker, do you mind if I post the NE section of your map on my FaceBook site, to share with my compatriots on the St. Jude thread? I think they'd be very interested in the old neighborhood.

Jjaba, are you sure about the Ty Cobb house being the Urban League office?

I remember Albert Kahn's daughter Rosalie Kahn talking (on a PBS "I Remember When" program) about living there back when that stretch of Mack Ave. was called "Rowena". I thought that was the Kahn residence? Or did Cobb live there before the Kahn's?

Anyway, it was a Kahn design.

.... Jjaba I just reread your post. You were talking about Cobb's house, and then you were talking about Kahn's own house, weren't you? My bad.

My mom wanted to seek if you can find out about Florence Ballard's house (after she got famous). My dad always loved that house. Did the Supremes stay on the east side after fame?

She was also wondering where the church was where Danny Thomas made the promise to St. Jude to build a hospital.

Thanks, you guys!

Marvin Gaye lived on W. Outer Drive. The house is on the curve, on the east side of the street--perhaps 8-10 houses from 7 Mile.

Harry Morgan aka Col. Potter was a Detroiter. Not sure where he lived. From Wiki:

quote:

Harry Morgan (born Harry Bratsburg on April 10, 1915 in Detroit, Michigan) is an Emmy-winning American television actor of Norwegian extraction. He graduated from Muskegon High School in Muskegon, Michigan, where he achieved distinction as a statewide debating champion.

He is perhaps best known as Colonel Sherman T. Potter on M*A*S*H, "Pete" on Pete and Gladys and December Bride, and Detective Bill Gannon on Dragnet.
