You heard it here first. how 'bout them rebates? "Gran Torino", yes named after Starsky & Hutch's preferred wheels, it looks like they'll be shooting gangbangers in in Mexicantown(yes, I know there's beautiful scenery up north). Keep it up, spacemonkey

I love Clint Eastwood. Here is a plot summary I found. Who knows what will really happen?

It’s a “coming of age buddy comedy” between an old fart (Eastwood, no offense) who cherishes his titular muscle car and a young, troubled [Hmong] kid who tries to steal said car to impress a gang.

A lot of filming is happening around here these days.

I used to run into crews filming car commercials in downtown or at various parks over the years. And I can't forget almost becoming an inadvertant extra in 'The Island'.

In the past couple of weeks, I have seen a) a crew filming a car scene on M-59 through Milford*, and b) the parade on Washington in Royal Oak.

*If you see a guy driving a late model dark gray BMW 3-Series talking on a cell phone in a movie in the next year or so--that's the scene I saw being filmed. ;)

I'm sure there'll be more of these sightings in the near future.

I'll never forget when the Island was being filmed. I looked out my eleventh story window of Park Apartments to see a helicopter crashed in the middle of Bagley. No set, no cameras, no people, no nothing. Just the helicopter on a closed street. They put the rest of the set a few days later. Needles to say, I was very confused. I was asking everyone in the CBD what happened.

God I felt like an idiot once I saw the cameras and actors a few days later... LOL! It looked so real... movie filming never even crossed my mind.

The thing that's interesting is they pulled out of L.A.(a buddy worked on "The Changeling"-Eastwood's last movie which was set & shot here-but because it's 1920's L.A. it was incredibly tough, 40's, 50's, great-20's they went about 140-mile range to find spots that could pass) & were set up in Minneapolis & they bailed & came to the D simply because of the rebate, I imagine it'll play "Detroit" as well

I should add in all likelihood there'll be another film production strike in the next month & a half. Will it hurt this show? I dunno, Detroit's a union town; http://www.variety.com/article /VR1117987873.html?categoryId= 2526&cs=1

There was recently a blurb in the Ann Arbor paper that Drew Barrymore's production company is looking around Saline.

In other movie news, a new Robocop movie is set to be released in 2010.

I heard that this one might not take place in Detroit, but how ironic would it be if it were filmed here.

Your barber is the same guy my husband goes to on Mack. A production crew showed up at his shop to consider it for scenes in the movie. I hope it happens. I think the barber could care less about rental fees for his place. He really just wants to met Clint Eastwood. I hope it happens for him.

Great article. That family has a story to tell at family picnics and Thanksgiving dinners for the next 50 years. It will be nice for them to see their house in scenes from a major motion picture.

As far as the Drew Barrymore movie: it's called Whip It and stars Ellen Page. Their production offices are set up in Saline. They are looking at Detroit areas for filming including outside Lafayette Coney Island.

*Lundy residence, according to the GP News.

I saw Clint around 2pm today, in the alley behind Mack-Marseilles (practically our backyard!).

They filmed today down in Kercheval in the park during the west framers market. They have been all over the Grosse Pointe area the last few days or so. Maybe more.

Ironically, Clint has been filming in spots very closely tied to my girlfriend for a number of reasons. Keep waiting to look up and see him.

Drew Barrymore was in front of the Lafayette Coney Island last Friday. She even borrowed an umbrella from Walter's Pipe Shop next door. She hasn't returned it yet. She said that she will return it in a couple of days, and, will autograph it for Scotty.

Drew Barrymore will also be in Eastern Market on August 14th for more filming.

Oh, and there's that TV show starring Aidan Quinn that's been shooting all over town lately (including the Compuware building and the UDM Chem building).

In time, celebrity sightings will no longer be of interest because there will just be so damned many of them.

In Ann Arbor, Barrymore has fake storefronts on 4th street and Eastwood was blowing up cars on Liberty Street.

Also I'm involved in another production currently filming in Ann Arbor. Barrymore and Eastwood's films aren't the only ones... I'd say about 10-12 others are shooting in the metro region right now. Just got off one set two weeks ago, and working on another now.

The tax incentives have worked beautifully... of all the talk of a brain drain and Michigan's faltering economy, this is one recent college grad who is sticking around in Michigan thanks to all the work on films. A year ago, I was considering a move to California ASAP.

I'm not alone, either. A dozen of my friends are helping out on Whip It, Gran Torino, and many of the other productions in the state.

Fake storefronts on 4th? On the YMCA site by any chance?

That's too funny. Why would you need fake storefronts in Ann Arbor.

That's great to hear, though, Gsgeorge.

This is just the first wave of features. Watch for the services companies popping up to provide assistance to the companies, watch for new equipment to move in town. The William White equipment idea does not sound great to me as we have been fighting 'run away' production to canada for years and now we're gonna give them money for films shot here? We can get any piece of equipment needed overnight.

Youth in Revolt is looking for PAs for an Ann Arbor shoot tomorrow.

Michigan Production Alliance will be offering bootcamps in Sept, Oct and Nov. www.mpami.org for details

Quite a few of the Detroit Derby Girls will be in Drew Barrymore's Whip It! movie. Some from the Grand Raggidy Girls are as well.
