Well it has been a week since my day trip to Detroit for a transit event, and I still can't get over the energy of the city that day. I know lots of people are tough on Detroit and don't feel things are getting better, but from an outside view, I can't believe the great transformation that is happening in your city.

Just the energy that day and seeing people excited about things like transit, and downtwon renewal, etc, was great.

I think you guys should be pretty proud of the great strides the city is making, even if they seem small.

I am still trying to put figure it out, but everytime I visit Detroit I leave with this just huge pull to want to visit again, and this great vibe. Don't know what it is.

Sweeet!

Thanks for the cross-border love, Mike.

Now we've got another reason to share well-deserved admiration for Toronto, neighbour.

It's a vacuum :-) And as we like to say each and every year, "it gonna be a long, hot, summer", and here it is. Enjoy this sweet town.

Mike, for me Detroit is like a small town with big city amenities. It's also because I feel like everybody is a sports fan, even if it's not true. You get a similar feeling in neighborhoods
around the ballparks in Boston, Chicago, etc. but since Comerica Park opened downtown (and the Tigers got better) it's like the whole downtown - casinos, hotels, restaurants, revolve around game time. Some would say that's because there's not much else going on, but it really gives the city a positive, unifying vibe. I just got back from the Wed/Thurs. games and my nephew and friend say they will never again go to the Rogers Centre (Skydome).

401don,

I couldn't disagree more with you.

It has relatively nothing to do with sports, I'd say the enthusiasm for and possibly even SUCCESS of our sports teams is a result of the move of the Spirit of Detroit, not the cause of it.

Although lately I've been feeling a wee bit down on the Spirit about the lingering foolishness as the clowns in power attempt to maintain their feeding trough amidst overwhelming revelations of decades of conspired wrongdoing and corruption.

We need to get that statue repair done, free our Spirit...go Metaldoctor, go!

Good to hear another recognize the spirit of our town, MikeinTO. Glad you had fun in our city.

Cheers

Mike, this thread got me smiling again. Thank you for that. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself in Detroit. It's no small feet that this is now possible again.

French777, your videos really cheered me up today after the Belle Isle disaster (wedding thread). Thank you!

Sean of Detroit, hope this also makes you smile- as a former Detroiter who has lived in various places in the last 20+ years, now residing in Miami, and who has watched from afar the changes in my hometown good and bad, also see the tide turning for the better at last.

Politics aside, it's obvious from a distance that the money interests have decided they are NOT going to let Detroit go- and with the awesome stick with it attitude of those who have remained, unlike those of us who left for greener pastures, and I include myself in that, coupled with the city's physical transformation speak to an optimistic future.

Sports has certainly played a part in that, as will art, recreation, historic preservation, cohesive neighborhood organizations, the already terrific universities, and eventually a first class public school system. Once residents get their political house in order and demand much more of their public servants than they currently do, then there is no stopping this great city from living up to it's motto.

To show my support, I will be searching this next week for a historic home in Detroit to buy and restore, bringing my actions in line with my rhetoric, at last. Thanks to Lowell for this site and all of you who make it work!

Welcome Lorax! Please come back to Detroit and take advantage of what we have to offer. Historic homes, beautiful communities, people with a conscience (sometimes). We need you here!

Check out the UCCA's website! It's a great resource.

Welcome Lorax, If I can help get you down here sooner in any way let me know. What areas are you looking to buy in??

Mike, thanks for the words, I think you brightened everybodys day here on the forum. Detroit HAS come a long way from the 70s & 80s.Ive never been to Toronto but have heard great thins, and am looking forward to visiting hopefully sooner than later.

Mike, like I said this citys come a long way, especially in the last few years. KKs been in charge, and as far as I can see hes done a pretty good job. Its a shame what had to happen with him to get the end result. Im not one to click on the Mayor scandal threads, maybe I should, but doesnt he deserve some credit for how good downtown looks? I could care less who hes screwin. I understand he got all his homies city jobs. A respected friend of mine was "dropped" to make way for a friend of his working a city position. I hated to see her gone because she truly cared but in the long run, I cant help but think KKs done quite a bit for our city.

Im sorry to bring this here, jacking it and all, but ppl have seemed to show no mercy on this man. With all the BS that hes pulled, cant he also be given some credit?

Again, sorry for the jack, it just seemed like a good neutral place to ask.

Cool, Lorax. Another forumer (Craigu) is relocating his entire family to East English Village in the City, from Florida.

Django, that is also my attitude. Before the scandal and the media fair, it was much easier for me to describe the good grasp on how to attract development that the mayor has. Now, it's no use, because the waters are too murky, and the hatred too great.

Kumbaya! Miketoronto, are you sure that vibe wasn't being induced by some Detroiter driving by in his hooptie with his bass cranked up?

I had the pleasure of meeting Miketoronto at last year's Preservation Wayne's Historic Theatre Tours, and talked with him quite a bit at some of the theatres on the tour (after my tour guide duties ended at the Filmore/State). He was really taken aback by the opulence of the Detroit Fox (what new visitor to Detroit wouldn't be?)

Miketoronto... a great guy who's got a soft spot in his heart for the big "D".
