there are Big Boys all over the world. When I was a kid my dad went to Brazil to open some up. They go by different franchise names in different parts of the country. California is Bob's Big Boy, not just Big Boy. I worked in the marketing dept and we did some research to open a few in Vegas. They though we were posers because we were called Big Boy and not Bob's. They have a pretty big presence in So Cal. Much the same as here. |

Gumby, The Big Boy trademark and org. are owned locally by Bob Leggett in Grosse Pointe. He purchased these from Elias Brothers. Thus, it matters as it is a Michigan headquartered business. The "Michigan Thing" ad is, I believe, local to the Michigan market. I thought that they were bagging on local names like Bob's or Shoeneys....but maybe not. It appears that the title of the thread is misleading |

^That's not the point. I'm certain Michigan has 10 times as many Big Boys than Ohio. (Message edited by DetroitRise on July 27, 2008) |

there are or have been Big Boys in Saudi Arabia, Canada, Brazil and Phillipines. Frisch's is exempt from the franchise pact and does not have to pay Ligget royalties. |

Well I went to the site. Those Big Boys are either not affiliated with the corporate offices or simply closed shop. |

Come on, everyone knows the Big Boy. It was even satirized in Austin Powers. I can remember the one in Downtown Windsor along Oulette. I never understood why they would want to drop the individual franchisors uniquenesses and create a 'one Big Boy under god' theme. Growing up we always called the place Elias Brothers. Other places called em Bob's, Firsh's or Shoney's. It was all good. |

http://www.bigboyitsamichigant hing.com/ http://michiganthing.com/artic le_001.shtml The franchisee was upset, because to declare "Big Boy" a "Michigan Thing" is borderline absurd-being as "Big Boy" was created out here, Bob Wian opened his 1st diner in Glendale @ 800 East Colorado Bl(yup, like the Rose Parade & "Little Old Lady from Pasadena")...for you true crime aficionados the Hillside Strangler's torture upholstery shop was a block away. Most of them were converted to Carrow's around '89-'90 , which aren't anywhere as great as Bob's. Plus, there were more "Googie" style Big Boy's out here than there were Googie's http://www.laokay.com/ArmetDav isNewlove.htm -many of them were just bulldozed...including the "Miracle Mile" location as of last week http://la.curbed.com/archives/ 2008/07/homeowners_assn.php (a friend who was big in Detroit music worked next door, it reminded her of home) so a lot of locals take a personal affront to having the Southern California culture co-opted(like losing Motown Records, I guess), I mean, they identify with Bob's like In-N-Out & Tommy's...not McDonald's. It's a dumb slogan-you can get in an argument with a New Yorker that Coneys are a "Michigan Thing", or a Welshman that pasties are a "Michigan Thing". Or the threads here go on and on about Shield's & Buddy's Pizza-but the face of Michigan pizza to the world is Domino's, Little Caesar's & to a far lesser extent, Hungry Howie's, like it or not. Michigan tends to embrace certain local things but ignore others like Gerber's baby food, yet you never read anybody waxing poetic about Jiffy muffin mix. I know I enjoy Jiffy muffins more than Gerber's. I have friends who prefer Squirt to Vernor's. I know guys who would be far more interested in seeing the Whizzer Bike Factory than any of the Big 3 or Orphan nameplates, that's all http://www.geocities.com/whizz er_17044/Odyssey.html |

Big Boy is every bit an American icon as McDonald's. A few of my pix from Bob's in CA are on this site: http://www.roadsidepeek.com/ro adusa/southwest/california/soc al/socaleats/socalcoffeeshop/b obstoluca/index.htm Some midwest Big Boy's are on this page: http://www.roadsidepeek.com/rp eekeast/eatseast/bigboyeast/in dex.htm |

I never viewed Big Boys as large national franchise due to the differences between them, but more as local one. Especially when the food is different at many of them. |
