During the summer Royal Oak Farmers market on Saturday morning. Westborn, holiday, the Kroger at 15 mile & Coolidge is great and in the center with Target, Kohls, Michaels etc. I live near 8 Mile and Woodward.

We haven't had a corner store in our area in 15 years.

Holiday in Royal Oak, Trader Joe in Berkley, Plum Hollow at 9 and Lahser in Southfield (they have great meat and an on site cook who bakes bread and pies and makes all kinds of ready to eat food). Southfield Farmer's Market at Millenium Center on JL Hudson Drive north of Northland on Thursdays.

Glory Foods on Outer Drive and Southfield was great when I stopped in there a couple of weeks ago.

-Eastern Market
-Zaccaro's
-University Foods
-Honey Bee La Colmena or E&L (both very nice and on my way to/from work)

I live in Brush Park, so all of locations are within 2 miles of home, too!

Sometimes I go to the Kroger stores in Dearborn (Michigan Ave & Colson), Redford (Telegraph) or Ferndale (8 Mile) if I happen to be in those areas, but I do my shopping in the city more often than not.

Eastside. My wife and I regularly use the Spartan grocery store at Riverbend on Jefferson west of Chalmers. Friendly, good prices, good meat, minimal time spent in the check-out lines.

We have a friend who shops Harbortown and Indian Village Market.

Give them a try.

Until a friend mentioned 'em the other day, I hadn't considered Trader Joe's in Grosse Pointe Park.

Not used to driving that way, it is only seven miles...closer to Eastern Market than any of my other usual sources.

I do some of my shopping at Eastern Market, and also love the Honeybee service and attention...and occasionally find myself down at the Lincoln Park Meijers and Calder's Factory store on Southfield east of Fort Street.

I treat Zaccaro's as any convenience store, very glad they're there when nobody else is open...

Odd as it may seem but Target has great deals on a lot of dry good items cereal, pasta, etc. Aldi also has good deals on cheese, frozen meat products and snack foods.

When I lived in Hamtramck my main store in town was Al-Haramine, and sometimes the Glory for stuff that I couldn't get there (though I tried to avoid Glory as much as possible -- scuzzy store, and overpriced to boot.) The thing is, since those stores never reliably had everything I wanted, and because so much of my social life was up in Ferndale, I think I ended up shopping on 9 at Western Market and the Natural Food Patch (both of which are great stores) more often than in Hamtramck.

I think if I ever end up back in Metro Detroit, I'd probably get a place in Ferndale within walking distance of those two, since it's important to me to live a relatively (or ideally, absolutely) car-free life.

Zaccaros and Eastern Market
At Zaccaros you can get a lot at reasonable prices, some prices are worth it in quality. Grape leaves, olive bar, high quality lunch meat, whitefish sausage, great hummus, only chocolate chip cookie that can rival Avalon...
.....don't overlook Zacaros, not all of it is expensive just be wise when shopping there.

Zaccaro's is pretty nice, but I never really figured out how to use it as my main store. If there were a full-line grocery store that was a little less yupscale right beside it, I think the combination would be dynamite. Maybe Honeybee serves that purpose, for people who don't mind driving to get groceries -- I know I'm kind of a weirdo about driving.

When I visit the metropolitan Detroit area, usually for a week at a time, I shop exclusively at Nino Salvaggio's out on Hall Rd, near my folks' place. They have good produce, my primary food intake, fun snackies for little parties/picnics, good granola, deep and satisfying ice cream

hey, I'll be shopping there this week!! how exciting!

Gambling Man, Western Market is on 9 Mile, West of Woodward, on the South side of the street. It is just on the border of what you might consider "downtown proper". It is across the street from Ferndale Foods.

"It is across the street from Ferndale Foods."

Isn't it across the street from Sav-a-lot? Ferndale Foods is further west (at Livernois)

"Independent grocers all over Hamtramck. I just bought a big basket for my bike."

I'll second that.

+
Eastern Market
+
Grandmont Rosedale Farmer's Market (organic produce, meat and eggs)
+
A good, local Spartan Store (University Foods, Harbortown Market, Indian Village Market)
+
SW Detroit (HoneyBee, E & L, Ryan's)
+
Yorkshire Market, Muellers (GP Park), Farmers (GP), etc...

No need to head way out to Ferndale for a good meat counter.

Also, no need to head over to the big box to save $$$. Buy local products from local businesses.

I live on the east side. Thank god for Trader Joes! The Grosse Pointe Kroger is the last place I will go! Bad management and the veggie are not the freshest. Village food market on mac is my favorite. great meat counter, variety of ethnic foods. If you are cooking a new recipe, you are close to knowing you will find everything there. and if they don't have something, the owners are great. they will order it for you.

I always shop at SAVE a LOT and have recently started using the new ALDI on 14mile in Clawsen. If I HAVE to get a brand name item, I'll hit Hollywood market at 12 & Campbell. But I shudder at their HIGH PRICES. I can't believe people actually buy ALL their groceries in there. Same with Kroger. I'm happy with the inexpensive off/brand stuff. I can get a box of corn flakes for 99 cents at Save A Lot. And milk is $2.49 at Aldi & generic rice checks are $1.79. Not almost $5 like at Hollywood.
