Hi all,

I'll be in town this weekend, and my fiancee (who is from Texas) and I were hoping to be able to get some authentic Mexican breakfast tacos from somewhere in Mexicantown.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

What do you mean by breakfast tacos? I live part-time in Mexico, and while tacos are very popular for breakfast, I know of no tacos that are exclusive to breakfast. Maybe barbacoa is pretty much a morning thing?

Also, do you want Tex-Mex style tacos or Mexican tacos? They're pretty different.

I like Taqueria Mi Pueblo in SW Detroit, which has both Mex and Tex-Mex, but the tacos are definitely Mex. No hard shells or weird stuff in your taco(for Mexicans) like cheese or beef.

I get chorizo and egg tacos all the time, not just for breakfast, so I'm not sure what you mean either. I'll second Mi Pueblo.

I lived in Austin for a while, and they specifically called certain tacos breakfast tacos. They were usually soft shell, made with scrambled eggs, Chorizo, peppers, cheese, and salsa. Sometimes they use Migas as the filling. I think that's what Cman is talking about.

Hi guys,

Sorry, this is probably my own non-Mexicanness coming out. (While my fiancee is from Texas, I am from NYC. But I am gaining a great appreciation for Mexican food and really like it.)

I was thinking tacos like chorizo and egg or chilaquiles, but you are right that those are not exclusive to breakfast. I think it's more than I have had them in the morning (had spectacular ones in San Antonio two weeks ago).

As for the tacos themselves, I am looking for authentic Mexican tacos - definitely not TexMex. I really love chilaquiles and tacos de carnitas (though I cannot seem to find them much), and my fiancee loves tacos al pastor.

Jcole: My fiancee is from Texas (and went to college at UT in Austin), and so that's probably where the terminology comes from.

Them's good eats, Cman. So are breakfast burritos, but I think those are more western and tex-mex. I've gotten them mostly in Colorado and New Mexico

Yes, indeed. San Antonio was really awesome, as we were able to get fresh made flour tortillas, which were great. Tacqueria Mi Pueblo, which Crawford and Downriviera mentioned, does have carnitas and al pastor, but not chilaquiles. They also have breakfast burritos But I am looking forward to trying the tacos de carnitas.

We've got a little place up here in Almont that has excellent carnitas and pastor. I'll have to check and see if they have egg tacos.

I think I would consider Taco Bell tacos at 3am after a night of heavy drinking to be breakfast tacos. I've had the breakfast burgers at White Castle too.

Lupita has an excellent chorizo and egg taco filling, but the true Austinite breakfast taco, and its eye-opening counterpart, migas, are hard to find around here AFAIK. A great business opportunity.

Tex, If I'm not mistaken, migas are basically scrambled eggs with tortillas torn up and mixed in with hot peppers, correct?

Migas: also with onions and typically with a light layer of cheese broiled on top, all finished off with very hot sauce. The dish goes by various names ("chilaquiles" is another)--a great, simple combination of flavors.

Fish tacos: Rincón Taraxco on Junction has reasonable seafood. Can't remember whether they specifically have fish tacos, though.

Chilaquiles and Migas are a different. Migas is a Texas dish; I don't think Mexicans even know what it is. Chilaquiles may be be the most popular classic "poor man's" Mexican breakfast.

Chilaquiles in Mexico never have hot peppers, cheese, potatoes or eggs (ok, I once saw eggs as an option). It's just stale tortillas from the night before deep-fried, and add onions, chives, some spices and tons of salsa verde. That's it.

Great for a hangover.

You could try Evie's Tamales for breakfast. Evie's introduced me to Chilaquiles! Although there were no breakfast tacos (to my knowledge - you could always ask), they were always served with tortillas, so you can always wrap it up and make your own. :-)

I found this menu for Evie's posted; since it's not from from a website directly connected to Evie's I'm not sure how up-to-date it is but at least you can get an idea of some of their breakfast items.

The real breakfast dish, if the Prof recalls from his days in Denver, is huevos rancheros and this is widely available all along West Vernor. If you're doing it right, take the 49 Vernor bus from Capitol Park on a Saturday because hopefully you're too hung over to want to drive.

The further west on Vernor the better by the way - the touristy joints near I-96 aren't as authentic. Get to Livernois or Springwells or down that way somewhere.

By the way what happened to that Argentinian place at Vernor and McKinstry? Tango Bravo I think it was called, and seems to have been closed for a while now. Didn't cut it? Shame; I'd like to see a mix of cultural joints rather than just Mexican and Guatemalan.

Cman:

I went to visit my brother in austin and was introduced to the breakfast taco. Detroit doesnt know what the breakfast taco is about quite yet. If I want a b taco done right, I have to make it myself.

However, Detroit Breakfast House has breakfast tacos on their menu. They wont be like the ones from Guerro's, but they are pretty good. They are the best in detroit I have found to date.

Now that I think of it, what about a breakfast crepe? There is that crepe place behind oslo. Maybe they will make one up.

Y'all have made me hungry. I guess I will go to the cafeteria and have a bacon and egg b taco. The cooks are some very sweet Mexican ladies who make a great hot sauce. Have a good day. :-)

Their tacos & hot sauce are almost as good as the Tamale House #3 on Airport.

A long time Metro Detroit resident and have recently moved to Austin. I know exactly what you're looking for in Detroit, just not sure where you'd find it. I'm not all that familiar with the breakfast offerings in Mexican town. I would compare the availability of breakfast tacos here in Austin to the availability of Coney Dogs in Detroit. They seem to be quite exclusive to the area in which they were born. :-)

<off> On a side note, you said your fiancee went to UT, did he ever make it to Moonshine for brunch? Tasty tex-mex breakfast treats. :-) </off>

Tacos de cabeza are REAL Mexican tacos. They're classic Mexican heartland cusine; big in the area known as El Bajio, which stretches from Mexico City north to Leon.

No fake stuff like those egg and bacon "breakfast tacos" up there in Austin. Sounds like something made up by McD's.

Believe me, they don't taste like McDs. It's probably a spin off of Migas, in a 'take-with' tortilla style.

Jcole Actually they DO have some pretty good breakfast tacos here, now that Del Taco's here you can try the Big Fat Breakfast Taco;

I have to say, I fell in love with Austin food when I was there. Barbecue everywhere, not just 2 or 3 places, Tex Mex, and some off the wall stuff, like Shady Grove Cafe, and Magnolia. Double Daves stuffed Calzones are to die for, and unbelievable steaks all around the town. Even the grocery stores were great.
I miss that town. But I love Michigan.

Jcole: going to have to disagree with you about the grocery stores here in Austin. The majority of them are HEBs, which remind me of Farmer Jack circa 1987. They are pretty bad. :| Now, there do exist both Whole Foods and Central Market, which are quite a bit nicer; though a lot pricier as well. I was spoiled when living in MI, as I was < 1 mile from Joe's Produce in Livonia; now that's a great store! :-)

As for food, there's delicious BBQ everywhere (will be enjoying some tomorrow for lunch), and excellent tex mex. It's tough to find good Middle Eastern food; nothing can touch the quality in Metro Detroit. I've also been hard pressed to find some good greek around town. I've not made it to all of the options yet, so I'll continue to explore. :-) As for the steaks, I've not had a bad one since I've been down here!

I agree that the mid-eastern food is lacking, and good luck finding a Coney. Also, the deli's are abyssmal.
I found a couple good HEBs when I was there, but I really liked the Albertson's. I think a lot of those have closed.
The best HEBs that I found were out I35 toward Pflugerville, where I worked.
One was on Parmer just east of I 35, and I think there was an Albertson's the other side of 35 and down a mile or so. There was also a pretty good Barbecue joint called Pok-e-jos out there. I stayed at the Springhill Suites on the corner of 35 and Parmer for a month before I got an apartment

I live out that way and will be heading to Poke-E-Joe's today for lunch. It has the best offering of sides, and some damn tasty meats! Mouth is watering just thinking about today's lunch! :-)

Agreed that the HEB on Parmer and 35 is pretty nice, but the one at Mopac and Parmer is pretty ghetto... and the one further up into Pflugerville off of Wells Branch Parkway. I made that mistake once, and that will be the last. :-)

I'll definitely be getting my coney fix when I'm back in MI this fall. I will probably enjoy a coney dog, to keep with tradition, though I do love the huge menus that most coneys offer! Definitely missing some of my comfort foods down here. :-)

I agree that the HEB on Wells Branch is pretty bad. So is the rest of that strip mall. I used to work right across the street in the building behind the Wendy's.
Is the HEB on Mopac and Parmer right by a Starbucks?

Yah, the Starbucks is on the north side of that block on Parmer.

I was told by some friends that live in Pflugerville that there are some nicer options for grocery shopping nearer downtown. I'll stick with what I know is nice. :-)

Honey Bee market on Bagley for tortillas and, really, just about everything else.
Try the Park Bar (on Park) for shwarma and kebabs. Actually, the food comes from the Bucharest Grill next door, but why not have a drink while you wait?

Have you tried the coney dogs from Sonic? They are ok... I would like to know of a place to get really good ones here in Austin. We don't have the variety Detroit does. I had a great coney from a place called ?McCormicks? around the Beech Daly & Joy road area, they just opened recently.
(Sorry to be vague but I was a visitor and had no sense of direction.)

I just ate at a little Mexican place on Warren and Faust today called Taqueria Mi Tierra II, and they have Chilaquiles on the menu. They are the second location of two, the first one being on Schaeffer and Oakwood. The food was fantastic. It's a little hole in the wall next to the Taco Bell in Warrendale. I had the shredded pork tacos in their special chile sauce. Outstanding and cheap.
BTW, they specialize in Jalisco style food, the same as Taqueria Mi Pueblo, and their Chilaquiles are crushed tortillas, jalapenos, and eggs.
