According to new state calculation DPS graduation rate is at 58%. That's better than other estimates for example 33%. But there is still a lot of work to do. More in the Free Press, http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20080825/NEW S06/80825029 |

It's really even better than that. I'm not sure why they feel the need to validate the stigmatization of those that don't finish traditionally. Even more than that, though, I still don't think this takes those who transfer and graduate elsewhere essentially counting them as drop outs, and unlike in other city numbers, this would be huge considering the exodus from DPS for years, now. I've yet to see a measurement of graduation that I think accurately captures Detroit's true graduation rate. |

I know that Cooley graduates about 90% on time (of those who are in their senior year with us). We lose countless kids from 9th to the 12th grade. Some return, some don't. Some transfer to other schools and out of district. It's hard to calculate grad rates when we can't even transfer or receive transcripts in a timely manner! The technology for tracking students' whereabouts is outdated, at best. |
