they are having their annual autumn fund raiser in Southfield.

Plans in the works to celebrate Motown's 50th
-------------------------

So we get to hear more fluff about how much Gordy loves the city and how great he is for the city, blah, blah, blah.

This quote however struck me as humorous and sad all at the same time:

quote:

In anticipation of 2009's high-profile events, the museum is scaling back its annual autumn fund-raiser, which will take place Nov. 13 at Arturo's Jazz Theatre & Restaurant in Southfield.

I know of many, mnay venues in the city that would really like to get any business they can. My guess is that at the 50th celebration they will announce that they are movies the Motown Museum to a suburb. (No, I don't really think that will happen)

One more point. I can guarantee that Gordy will announce grand plans for a Museum/venue in the ctiy that will never come to fruition.

Many if not the vast majority of the rich, black Metro Detroiters they probably want to hit up for that fundraiser live and work in Southfield, Farmington and nearby suburbs now. Makes sense, practically.

It could be worse. He could be holding the fund raiser in Los Angeles

Southfield has not been "exclusively white" for a LONG time...

In fact, Southfield is majority black... and is suffering from massive white flight right now in business and residential areas.

My favorite quote from a fleeing Southfield resident: "It's great if you're black. The best schools if you're black. But my kids don't belong there, they'll learn the wrong things."

Who brought up color? Motown touts itself as a Detroit institution yet holds a fund raiser in Southfield.

The people that attend and donate to these institutions don't skip out due to driving a few miles.

Southfield and Lathrup Village are probably at least 75% black nowadays, but they're all middle-middle class; no rich folks.

Farmington Hills has some upper middle class, and is maybe 20% black.

West Bloomfield has lots of upper middle class and some rich, and is maybe 10%-15% black.

Oak Park is maybe 60% black and is all working class.

I would say the Southfield location is good for attracting the moneyed blacks in Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield, while still retaining the moneyed blacks in Northwest Detroit.

I agree with JT1, it's a shame that the fundraiser is being held in a suburb.

I am also in agreeance with JT1 concerning this - why is race being brought into this?

Southfield may be a city that has undergone a residential transition over the last twenty five years but I can assure you that it still has a quality government, police department and resident base that truly cares about the city prospering. The mayor recognizes there are problems, especially in the south end of the city but is working diligently to solves these issues and not let them spread further north. Just take a look at Northwestern Highway between 696 and Inskter. New strip malls and businesses are opening or under development and are filling in vacant spots that were either vacant land before or may just be a redevelopment project where the prior structure became abandoned. This should be considered noteworthy given are our stagnant economy. Crime is actually falling in Southfield according to an article I read yesterday.

Berry will probably announce a partnership with one of the casinos to put in a quasi-museum, allowing the original house on West Grand to decay further.

This crap is getting so old....

How about you do a little research in regards to Gordy's connection to the owners of Arturo's, rather than turning this into another city vs suburbs argument??????

You know, not everyone who moves their business, residence, or holds events outside of the city does it because they HATE Detroit. Sometimes there are good reasons and you should try to learn the whole story before you judge.

If you read the article, it mentions renovations to Hitsville going on this week and states that more celebration plans are in the works.
The fall fundraiser is not the point of the article, the real celebration begins in January 2009, much of which will probably occur in Detroit.

Last fall, if you recall, Berry came to the museum to dedicate the boulevard. He and Smokey were out there with a bunch of Motown vets. Other than that, there were maybe 30 people there including myself. Were any of you there?

Jfried - I never said or implied hate. I think indifference may be the more appropiate word.

It is more an issue in my mind that Berry Gordy will be hailed as a great person for the city (And I am not denying the previously great things that Motown did for the city). He has done great things for the city many years ago but much of it happended over 30 years ago.

In Gordy's own words, "I may not live in Detroit now, but it is on those streets where my heart lies,"

A few bucks for a business in the dying city might help, even a little bit. No hate implied nor is it city vs. suburbs just a simple matter of economics.

And they would be just as happy to spend their money in Detroit as they would in Southfield.

And I am pretty sure that black and white aliek will be supporting this.

Motown music certainly seems to be one of the few things that cut through racial barriers.
