Thanks for posting this... I didn't know all of that about 98! I knew of the football accomplishments, and Bob Grant told me how he had worked with him as a broadcaster in Chicago, but the war stories... I may have a new book to pick up!

Although 'ol #98 played for Michigan about 8 years before I started attending Michigan games, another Michigan player comes to mind whose storied career somewhat parallels Harmon's.
I speak of #49, Bob Chappuis, who played in 1942 and again after the war on Michigan's undefeated and national championship team of 1947. They went on to clobber USC in the Rose Bowl, 49-0.
And like Harmon, Chappuis also flew in the war, but he was shot down in his B-25 over Italy. And also like Harmon, Chappuis made the cover of Time magazine. He was recently honored in a brief ceremony at the Michigan-Utah game a couple of weeks ago.

Chappuis's nephew is Rick Volk, who also played at UM and was an all-American. He had a long career in the NFL as a strong safety. I believe he made a handful of all-pro teams.

Thanks Foosie, for the very nice post. I knew a lot about Harmon but certainly not all of that. Very interesting. I'll have to print this one.

The_rock,
You should tell us some of your Michigan football game stories some time. Man, you must have seen a lot of great games!

Thank you Stromberg/foosie. I just have been doing more reading than posting.
Best as I recall, the first game I attended in AA was 1946 when Art Renner was captain.
I note that some chap on eBay from England is trying to sell a large black and white photo of Renner for $250.00. But 62 years ago, Renner's picture( #80 ) graced the cover of all the home game programs for a modest 50 cents!!
