September 20, 2008 While over Michigan Central Station today I noted more than usual cars parked. However I saw no one around. I did see tents, tables, port-a johns. Haven’t see this much activity around the old station in many years. Can anyone explain what’s going on there today?

Tour Detroit attracted more than 1000 (or so i hear, I was at work) cyclists this year. Roosevelt Park was the base of operations. Congrats to Tour Detroit! (Message edited by mdoyle on September 20, 2008) |

Awesome photograph It sure looks mighty grand from the air. Years ago after the riverfront site fell apart, I had hoped that one of the permanent casinos would have located there. It would take someone with deep pockets to do the renovation and a casino operator would certainly have fit the bill. I liked the idea where people from Chicago or Toronto could take the train to Detroit and enjoy a nice little weekend in the "D". ahh yes ...broken dreams |

I think MCS would make a fantastic "government center" with all the Wayne County offices/Detroit police station located in and around it. Why keep everyone so spread out around the city in rented space?....get rid of the current CAY Building and move down off Michigan Ave. |

Good gosh, could we then make a holding cell for our deposed ex-MFIC? (that would be Mother Fucker In Charge, for the uninitiated, wouldn't want to cause any confusion in the ranks) Put it up on the top floor, sorta like a modern-day Rapunzel...held captive and forced to see what he was missing. There are more than a few Corktown residents that wouldn't mind the continual catharsis of flipping a fitting salute his way every time they went outdoors. But...great shot and timing Don! Now, can they use this picture to promote NEXT year's ride?! |

Technical question: who controls the airspace over Windsor? Is it easy (like a matter of asking via radio) to do flyovers in Canadian airspace if you're taking off and landing in the USA, or does it involve some extra paperwork? |

Here are two videos from YouTube. First is an interview with two old timers in 1987 and the second shows what the inside looks like today. It’s amazing what 21 years of neglect can do to a building. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =sbtyUsnrY2I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =28HZum0y5nA&feature=related |

That is a shame. My mother has spent the past couple weeks with me and brought a bunch of old Detroit photos with her. Among the photos are 12-14 of MCS when my grandmother worked there in the mid and late 40s. She was an REA (Railway Express) employee. It is amazing how beautiful and busy the place was. |

"21 years of neglect" more like 21 years of vandalism. |

Up to 2'999 feet Windsor ATC or London Approach. Above 3'000 feet Detroit ATC (Metro Approach / Departure ) with a hand off to London 15 / 20 miles into Canada. All U.S registered aircraft entering into Canadian airspace must be on a flight plan. Thank you Homeland Security, << sarcastic. |

To "Izzyindetroit". Yes you certainly can take the train to Detroit from either Chicago or Toronto with certainly some additional travel arrangements. From Toronto you would take Via rail to Windsor then take the Wyandotte bus to downtown, then take the tunnel bus, then take the 200 Michigan Ave. bus and then walk up to the train station. From Chicago you can take the train to New Center and take a taxi or the Woodward and Michigan Ave. bus lines to the train station. In reality you can get to Detroit from anywhere but simplicity is the key ! In my dream world you would have been able to take the train from Chicago or Toronto directly to the MCS and wheeled your luggage directly to your hotel room. After you lost all your money you would have a short stroll back to the train to take you home. What a concept ! On a broader note I could mention the difficulty of landing at Metro Airport and trying to get downtown. You can take Metro Limousine or a taxi and pay a bloody fortune or waste about an 1 1/2 and take the SMART bus if you know where to find it. I've travelled enough to appreciate the easy way of doing things. For 2 quick examples I like both Atlanta and Chicago where you can fly into the airport and then take mass transportation to their downtown. Detroit has not embraced this concept and I don't doubt for a second this has affected tourism for the city. |
