Cool little businesses - they are all over this city and I'm making a point to discover new ones every week. Some of the places I check out are not my cup of tea but rather than focus on what I don't like, I'd like to mention a few places that I really loved. Some of these places have been mentioned before, I know. 1) Black Whole Collective in Highland Park - on Woodward Avenue: http://www.modeldmedia.com/dev elopmentnews/DBIZblackwhole134 08.aspx I stopped there last week. Definitely a cool place, lots of great little cultural gifts, t-shirts, just really unique selection. Plus all of my favorite Indian incense and a cool, peaceful vibe. 2) Goodwells Natural Food Market - on Willis, in Midtown, right next door to Avalon Bakery. I LOVE this place and have been stopping by every week since I discovered it! Just a tiny little market, really, but they manage to carry a whole bunch of my favorite things, like my favorite tofu, tea, ginger beer, tamari almonds, ginger sorrel drink and more. They just have a great selection for vegans and people looking for healthy food and drinks. 3) Goldengate Cafe - on Woodward, near 6 Mile. http://www.innatedetroit.com/i -photos.html I know this place has been discussed here on Detroityes a few times. I stopped there last night for the first time. You feel like you are hanging out with friends, just totally relaxed and again, unique. I had a yummy vegan carrot cake muffin and apple cider. Definitely going to be a regular destination for me. 4) Caribbean Market - on 6 Mile, between Greenfield and Southfield Freeway. It's got a Jamaican flag painted on the front so easy to find. This place has a lot of great finds. Breadfruit, the big smooth West Indian avocados (IMO, much better than the rough textured avocado widely available), plus eddo and other hard to find caribbean vegetables. They also carry West Indian drinks, canned goods, lots of snacks, spices...all the things you love from the Caribbean. Good coco bread, rum cake and even Jamaican patties. Nice man that owns the business, too. Highly recommend you stop by and check it out. Anybody have some other places you've found that you'd like to recommend? |

I second Abick's! They also have the cheapest beer prices and "Gramma" always gives out tasty snacks! The decor is great, people are super friendly and "Gramma" is super sweet. how 'bout Los Altos restaurant on Vernor, after the Dix split? |

Tkierpiec you and I have something in common. I love discovering them out of the way-unique establishments. Thanks for reminding me about the Carribean market. Squindles on Wyoming features Nigerian style cooking. Try the Tilapia with spicy rice and plantains. |

True about Goodwills next to Avalon. Lots of organic-natural goodies stuffed into a small store-restaurant. Dine in at one of a couple small tables or grab a table outside. |

Terryh, I don't eat fish or meat but will still check out Squiggles, I'm sure they have something vegan for me. Have you ever eaten at the Caribbean restaurant on 6 Mile - just west of Schaefer? Can't remember the name. |
