Apparently the Indianans (?) have learned nothing from the Silverdome! http://www.detnews.com/apps/pb cs.dll/article?AID=/20081029/S PORTS0101/810290458/1361 (Message edited by publicmsu on October 29, 2008) |

I don't understand. Maybe I'm missing something. Isn't the Silverdome sitting vacant and hasn't it been vacant for a while without any plans for redevelopment? The Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy just opened 2 months ago and replaces the RCA Dome. The land where RCA was is already being redeveloped as part of an expanded convention center within months of the Colts move. I'm not a huge proponent of stadium replacement, especially in this economic climate but what exactly have they done wrong here and what should they have learned from the Silverdome? Oh, and by the way, people from Indiana are called Hoosiers. ;) |

The RCA Dome was great for fans, very intimate and close to the field. Noisiest stadium I've ever been to. Due to the Colts success they needed more seating and of course, luxury boxes. English is right though. Totally opposite of the incompetency shown by the City of Pontiac. |

This is my point... Why on earth has Pontiac been sitting on this monstrosity for so long when it's quite obvious that monster truck rallies and the rodeo just don't pay the bills. This shows what can happen when 'progress' is planned! |

It may be the same type of structure, but both have very different stories. The Silverdome was built out in the suburbs allowing very little compatibility (land or structure) with future redevelopment once it is no longer useful. In the other situation, the RCA Dome was built downtown to reinvigorate their urban center. It actually worked and the areas around it grew. Then, the time came to do a little reshuffling. Basically, the land the RCA dome sits on can suit a variety of purposes based of the demand around it, where the Silverdome is limited to a few....and even fewer in this economy. So forget business parks and shopping malls. |

oh, so a vacant stadium in a downtown area CAN be more than a decaying eyesore that needs to sit rusting until it is scrapped? Hmm... what a novel idea! And what did we do to Olympia and Tiger stadiums? Figures Detroit would be the one to do it wrong. |

"Why on earth has Pontiac been sitting on this monstrosity" If you have ever sat in on a city council meeting, you know just how petty the people we elect can be. double that for pontiac. they rejected some truly good ideas from the big round of proposals - some for the most absurd reasons, some because they wanted more money. small minded idiots the lot of them. and who did they decide to give it to? a guy who wants to build a racino on the site -- very unlikely considering the ballot measure passed a few years back considering any new gaming enterprises. morons. |
