With the deficit of over $100 million, the city needs more than the sale of the tunnel to make ends meet. What else can the city sell to close the amount needed? The cupboard is pretty bare, isn't it? Privatizing? Belle Isle? |

True leadership would look at brining more people and business to the city. Once an asset is sold, it is rarely recovered. If you sell assets this year, what is left to sell next year? |

They need to start selling off some of these vacant lots. Put them back on the tax roles. Why are they sitting on them? |

Cub, from what I understand, the titles aren't real clear on a lot of those parcels so they can't be sold. And, you know, there probably aren't enough people in the CAY working on clearing titles so it slows the process down further. Selling assets in this market does absolutely nothing to help the city move forward. We need better thinking that what we've seen the past few years. |

If i was on city council i would make a resolution to clear all titles on all property that hasnt had taxes paid in the last three years as it is two years by law already. Then there wouldn't be any problems. |

some of those lots were sold to KK cronies, too, at reduced rates - I'm sure they're just sitting as speculators waiting for opportunities to arise |

Remember Robocop 2 when the mayor tried to cut a deal with drug dealers to bail the city out of its debt? |

"Remember Robocop 2 when the mayor tried to cut a deal with drug dealers to bail the city out of its debt?" Yeaaaaa!! Let's sell coke! After all that would definitely boost our tourism business, it help fight Detroit's obesity and just think about how much more we could get done in the same amount of time. Yippieeeeeeeeee!! Problem is ... money is needed now. Grand plans for making money in the future is fine but you can't keep running deficits. These budgets are supposed to be balanced EACH year. Credit ratings and money from the state depend on clean books. Judgment Day is upon us. Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse. |

Too Easy! Build an Edgewater style Amusement Park on Belle Isle and in Rouge Park; Belle Isle Land would be water themed, Wild Rouge could promote a safari vibe. Because.......... "There is nothing, nothing, nothing we can't do together...do together - Take Another Look at Detroit" |

Daddeeo, I am following you around and agreeing with everything you say. Very short and simple. Maybe Jenny or George can give us another loaner. At least KCJ won't take it away from us....... will he? Maybe Kwame and friends can loan the city money to "move forward". |

Just how bad are things if the city is collecting about 200m a yr from the casinos and still running a 150m deficit? |

I thought casino revenue was down this year, so the city's take would be down, too. Honestly, I'm surprised the deficit is as small as it is. It's not as if KK was paying attention to the city's business the past couple of years. There are probably state and federal programs the city can participate in to get funds, but hasn't, and there are probably expenses that will go down without the friends and family plan in place. |

City of Detroit should simply sign-up for a Federal Bailout Plan; seems to be working quite nicely for our nation's financial institutions & their equally hardship-immune stockholders |

Problem with that is ...there is a line about a mile long with other cities and states that are in a sad situation too. |

Sell Manoogian now. It has become just a symbol of thug parties etc. City could use the money from sale and save from not having the upkeep expense. |

I will say this about Detroit..... The city has come one-helluva long way, in a short period of time. I was totally mind-boggled by the redevelopment, that now stretches from Michigan Avenue - all the way to Wayne State University - along Woodward Avenue. |

Six years ago my business consortium mailed then Mayor A. a check in the amount of $5M for the escrow on the purchase of Belle Isle. Our offer was $750M for the island and the bridge and the mainland approaches. The only contingency was that it would be ceded from the city to become "Belle Isle Township". Several other contingencies relative to the State of Michigan and taxation were minor in nature. The offer was serious and flatly refused. Coast Guard and Yacht Club were welcome to stay and we would have relocated the Dossin Museum. Our plan was to develop the Isle into a planned community. Much of our funding was from off-shore and was definite. Think of how much that money could have done for the residents of the city. Now, since a lot of the best part of the island is paved over for racing, it is probably worth a lot less. We built elsewhere and have had a successful venture that could have been a plus for the area. too bad. |

Belle Isle is a nostalgic and quality of life issue for Detroiters. I don't think it should be sold. It would be like taking the Dodgers out of Brooklyn ... too depressing. |
