More in the Free Press, http://www.freep.com/article/2 0081101/BUSINESS06/811010317 25 Detroit grocers joined the Guaranteed Fresh Detroit Independent Grocers Initiative than will launch next week. The initiative is a guarantee to sale quality food/ shopping environment in Detroit. Facts, Detroiters spend nearly $1 billion on groceries. 1/5 of that money or 200 million goes outside the city limits. Detroit can support between 600,000 and 1 million square feet of retail grocery store space. That equals to more than 12 47,500 square feet supermarkets. 50% of Detroiters lives in a food desert. Guaranteed Fresh initiatives markets makes up 1/4 of the markets in Detroit. This is a great thing that Detroit grocers are doing. |
