John Dingell has been in Washington for 53 years... and he (not Waxman) were at that meeting with Pelosi and the Big 3... who incidentally put their 2 cents in about keeping big John in his powerful chairmanship.

John Dingell (who was reelected) will cross a historic milestone next February... the longest serving member of the House of Representatives in American history.

Incidentally... come January... the Speaker of the House will give the oath of office to all other 434 House members... while she herself will have her oath administered first by the Dean of the House... John Dingell.

And your point is? Dingell has had a long and distinguished (at least in some dimensions) career. But he is way out of step with his caucus on CO2/emissions issue, and I won't be surprised if he is displaced. I suppose alternatively they could change the jurisdiction of his committee, if his fellow members thought that was less offensive.

My point is... Duh!! don't underestimate the power of Dingell...

While liberal members of congress are worried about CO2 emissions, most folks in Michigan are worried about the survival of the auto industry in general...

Waxman does not care about the Michigan economy (most Congressmen don't anymore). Keep Dingell in the chairmanship. Dingell will ultimately make sound compromises that will benefit both parties (environmentalists and struggling automakers).

Dingell has never compromised when it came to the auto industry. He and the Big Three have been myopic to the extreme. If he'd been pushing and nudging the Big Three to get their acts together decades ago, instead of coddling them, they might not be in as bad condition as they are today. His wife was a GM lobbyist and it's a toss up whether she or his son Chris will succeed him in his seat. The Big Three spent huge sums of money lobbying against every environmental and safety regulation ever proposed. Dingell needs to be challenged. And yes, I'd like to see someone challenge him who really does care about the auto industry. Someone who will work for and apply 'tough love' to the companies our families worked for for generations. The companies that, along with the workers and stockholders, made it the greatest industry in the history of our country. The auto industry is another example of the 'brilliant' leadership of our 'captains' of industry. The same people who orchestrated this mess our world economy is in and the resultant bail out for corporations and CEO's. Until a few months ago you could go in to the DAC, Oakland Hills and other private clubs and they had regular worship service for Greenspan and CEO's of corporations. Probably still do. Same people that would vote for Bush again, given the chance.

It's part of the worthless Pelosi's and Obama's plan to put and end to most new drilling and sticking it to manufacturers with high environmental over regulation. This would not bode well for Michigan or any of the big manufacturing states

I'm interested to see if there is any truth to the widely reported rumor that "Bail-out" (yes I understand they are loans) money will only go to the Detroit 3 if Dingell steps aside.

Yeah right, like there's even a fraction of enough oil here to keep America's fleets running...

Doubt it. Dingell is more progressive, if any of you would actually bother to look at his entire record.

Long ago he proposed higher gas taxes to get people to conserve fuel or switch to alternatives. The recent price spike proved his proposal would work, but those politicians more interested in keeping their positions instead of doing what's best for the country didn't back him.

He has proposed fixes for healthcare ever since he's been in office, but no one bothers to really work on the issue.

He is more aware than anyone in Congress of the intertwined role industry and finance play in the nation's economy and the need to balance the two sectors. Everyone else just grabs whatever they can get, long range impact be damned.

Waxman has done nothing productive. He's Chair of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Other than hold his showboating hearings what has he ever done?

I don't understand the condescension for Pelosi and Obama. If it weren't for those two Washington would let Detroit role over and die. Bush and Co. does not want to help GM out of this situation, for the record...
