Jewel Ware, the chairwoman of the Wayne County Commission, hired two ex-convicts and paid them with county funds even though no evidence could be found that they performed any duties for Wayne County, an audit of the county’s hiring and payroll practices revealed today.

Ware did not attend a meeting of the commission’s audit committee today when Mayo went over the report. Her administrative director, Bill Johnson, declined to comment on the report or its findings.


“I have had contact with the state Attorney General’s criminal division, with the Michigan State Police and the FBI, and I expect within a matter of days, FBI will submit a request for subpoena for relevant information,” he said. “In light of that situation, it probably would not be appropriate for me to comment.”
