Chuck: Great photos of Cooley! Took me a minute to realize that one of them was of the teacher mailboxes in the office! Funny to see things through other peoples' eyes. |

One of the schools I work in won some design award,It no way compares to the craftmanship that went into those schools listed. The sad part is that closed schools like Mac,Redford,Etc are being neglected to say the least. But at least you have photos and memories. |

Crying shame to let that fine of a building just sit and slowly rot away. Never knew schools could be so beautiful |

Rid, sometimes I think the Atlanta way of dealing with old unused building might be better. |

Those pictures reminded me of some pictures I took a couple summers ago of the elementary school I attended: Nichols Elementary at Burns and Goethe, built in a beautiful arts and crafts style in 1910 (with an addition to the north added in 1919). There are still a few schools left of this type in the city from this period. As the pictures linked above attest, Detroit sure did build some fine schools back when the district had money and the city was expanding.

Ericdetfan....the metal screens are of thick-gauge perforated steel, bolted in place from within the building; doors are welded shut. The front entrance at Mackenzie was knocked down last month; would have required massive force. Thieves will stop at nothing. |

Sumas,I was refering to what RID said about down there. They either bulldoze or practice fire fighting skills on them buildings. That was in the missing houses thread.Seeing photos of Mackenzie does make me sad and hearing about the theives getting into it makes it even worse. I would hate to see such schools as Mac&Redford turn into a hell hole such as Wilber Wright.Oh yeah I think RID lives in SC, any way as the old saying goes "use it or lose it" which happens alot around here. |

hmmm well I'll give it to them for using something other than wood for once. They had better hope the thieves don't figure out how to take that steel down, they'll be taking it the local scrap yard. |
