just wondering how they reacted - conventional battery/electrical doesn't usually like this cold

Hybrids are actually good that way, because they are designed to have a lot of extra cranking power so that they can routinely turn their engines on and off in normal operation. However, the batteries do lose power in cold weather as you describe, and you would get reduced range on the batteries in those conditions.
