Don't know if thread has been done before but here goes. What is your favorite Detroit coney island? Mine would have to be Lou's on the corner of 7 Mile and Mound. Excellent breakfast skillets!

American & National are at the top of my list. :-)

There are a few scattered around the neighborhoods I like as well (though I can't name them off the top of my head).

Meant to say- What about all the talk about the Sonics that were opening last year?

I remember some were talking about it being busy? Curious why the Foot Long Chili Dog from there hasn't made it on the list yet?

Sonic was very busy when it opened last year in Southgate, and still is.......why I don't know. The food is terrible, just my opinion. Has the canned, synthetic taste. Burgers and Fries are frozen and the cheese on the foot long chili dog is that processed stuff, kind of like cheee whiz, and the chili is from a can and tastes terrible. I'll drive to Southfield for a Fat Burger any day, I'd trade Sonic for Fat Burger.

To me, Fatburger is just average. Try Jaws jumbo Burger on Orchard Lake Road near 13 mile, it's way superior to Fatburger.

Sonic's coney dog just isn't a Detroit Coney.

Not even close. Not that it tries to be.

I agree, their food sucks.

Thanks Softailrider. The next time I get my Fat Burger craving I will head up to Jaws instead. It's not that much further once I am up in that area, and I do luv a good burger.

I'm glad to hear that Lou has unlocked the secret to the breakfast skillet. I was beginning to worry that Detroit was on the verge of culinary collapse.

I agree the sonic in southgate is not very good.

I have been to sonic's in vegas and stlouis at least 20 times and always had good food, double cheeseburger and a strawberry/banana smoothie.
Sonic is not in the same league as in an out or fatburger, but much better than burger king or mcdonalds.
The southgate sonic tastes like it uses rejected white castle beef.

I've been to National and Lafayette. I still say Duly's is superior. Two Duly's coneys barely fit on a plate. Some other places go light on the chili and chop their onions too coarsely. Key to a good Coney is finely chopped onions and plenty of chili.

For take out, Duly's wraps their coneys in paper. This is so much better than styrofoam. If you have yet to try Duly's, it is well worth the trip.

Yes, Duly's is great. Duly's wrapped in paper are even better the next day. One heck of a chili cheese burger too.

They also have excellent breakfast.

Duly's
Athens
Old downtown favorite, Gus's

But, in its heyday, George's was THE best.

I loved going to the old Senate Coney on Mich Ave. I think I said that before. Sonic wasn,t as good as I thought, I rather eat a double bacon cheese burger from Del Taco. I still like Senates I have been going to the Livonia {bad word here} location for at least 20 years, and in Detroit its Layfayette.

Interesting that everyone is focusing on the Coney Island Hotdog here in this thread. When I read the title of the thread, I thought "here we go again"...another thread on whose got the best coney island hotdogs. But when I read Funjon1's comment on Lou's and their breakfast skillet, I expected the thread would turn into a comparison of Coney Island restaurants.

As far as Coney Island restaurants....I really like National for their farmer's omelet, chicken-lemon-rice soup, Hani sandwich, and coney taco. And I love that we can enjoy National 24/7 in Royal Oak!!

Also favor Spanga's on Woodward s of 14 Mile Rd for their Gyro Salad; Plaka's for their gyro and feta omelet and French toast; and Hercule's on 12 Mile Rd. in Farmington Hills.

I steer clear of Leo's Coney Islands, and I don't particularly care for Athens Coney Island (Royal Oak).

As for the Coney Dogs....Lafayette is still Number One with me!

Back in the 60's there used to be a good one on Van Dyke near the old Leytons Store. I don't remember the name, my mom used to call it the Greasy Spoon.

I live near Bay City now, but grew up in Detroit and attended WSU. Lafayette Coney Island holds a lot of memories for me and it's still my favorite coney. My brother-in-law still lives in Detroit and he votes for National. I've tried them, they're great, but you can't beat the "ambiance" of Lafayette. I was there this past Thursday and nothing changes. I have to go there every time I'm in Detroit.

This type of thread is on the verge of becoming corny. A typical way a newbie tries to break the ice. All the regulars will agree that for taste and nostalgic sake the best are Lafayette and American

Regulars?? Who made you the spokesperson, for anything.

IMHO Laf/Amer both serve cold buns and to little chili on their dogs.

Duly's rocks.

If you think a thread is corny don't read it.

Save the corn-dogginess for the State Fair.

Duly's dogs and loose hamburgers are tops. Doesn't hurt that they are one of my strongest early childhood memories. Comfort food extraordinaire.

Another set of folks got turned onto them recently, they proclaimed the joint Detroit's Best Kept Secret Dive. Don't pass this joint!

Cheers

anyone ever hear of Zack's Hotdogs? There was an article in Crains Detroit Business saying that were getting 5-15 of them around SE michigan soon. I know one is opening on hall rd in macomb township near that new mall and I think theres another one on groesbeck next door to the new sonic

as for the ones already here, National is tops!

When I went to Vegas a few weeks ago I ate at the Motor City Coney Island in Henderson. I found it thanks to Ray1936. The lady had faygo, better made and Dearborn hot dogs. It was a great treat to start a great vacation. Low and behold, which coney did she go to growing up?.............

Why would you go all the way to Las Vegas to eat the same stuff you can get at home? Isn't going on vacation "to get away from it ALL"? :-)

I never was big on the famous downtown Coneys, though I do drop in now and then. Duly's is great, I like Zef's in Eastern Market (the Prof and Zef go back a ways, incidentally), the U of D Coney (former Onassis) at Livernois and Puritan, and there's good food at the coney at Six and Hamilton but damned if I can think of the name.

Whatever happened to Onassis as a decent size chain of coneys, by the way?

If I'm in the suburbs and I want a coney... I hop on the bus and go into the City. I have not found anything outside Detroit (well, I guess technically the SE corner of Six and Hamilton is HP) that is worth the money.

As for favorite coney island, it's Ted's in Allen Park.

Next time I go to Vegas I will have to try the Motor City Coney Island in Henderson. My normal Vegas triple play is In N Out Burger, Jack In The Box, and Lotus of Siam, the best Thai food outside of Bangkok.
