I saw "manhole" and thought, "Menjo's?" :-)

Wasn't that the title of a Grace Slick album. Manhole. Try the Record Graveyard in Hamtramck.

Try: www.dwsd.org/

Prepare to be laughed at; buying these things legally has probably never been done before.

This could be the moneymaker the city has been looking for...replace existing ones with carbon-fiber replacements with GPS tracking and traffic reporting chips...and sell off the steel as souvenirs. Brilliant!

I do believe, however, the proper modern term should at least be 'personhole' cover.

I don't see why they wouldn't sell one at a tidy profit.

I think it's an excellent idea. Just have a few extra in stock that if you don't sell, you eventually use.

Contact East Jordan Ironworks in East Jordan, MI. They're the folks who make (or used to) most of the manhole covers & fire Hydrants.

There's not a big market for individual purchase of manhole covers. Or telephone poles, stop signs, police cars, fire engines, etc.

double check that statement re: police cars and fire engines...

they seem to go pretty quickly from my limited knowledge. a buddy in sacramento just bought a retired seagraves engine and has been working on refurbing it. he repaired the PTO/transfer case pump equipment and has most of the sacramento fd drooling over it. he used to have a sacramento county sheriff car also but he sold it off after getting all of the graphics and lights replaced/repaired...

"I do believe, however, the proper modern term should at least be 'personhole' cover."

Gannon, I think the PC term is "human access point cover."

who really cares, dont steal them.
