This is a heads-up that the Detroit Artists Market will be showing a number of Hughie Lee-Smith's less-seen works beginning Friday (February 13) and going for two weeks.

Lee-Smith is one of the most important modernists to come through Detroit (he first showed at the Detroit Artists Market in 1947 and had his breakout moment in 1953 with a prize from the DIA). He was one of the first African-American artists in the country to be shown in mainstream galleries. Some of his works are in the permanent collections at the Met, the National Gallery, and the DIA (among others).

This is definitely worth seeing. The Artists Market is on the west side of Woodward just north of Forest.
