The 51st annual Michigan in Perspective: the Local History Conference will be held April 17-18, 2009 at the McGregor Conference Center on the Wayne State University campus. The conference was organized by the Michigan in Perspective Planning Committee and the lead sponsor and conference administrator is the Historical Society of Michigan. Other main sponsors include the Detroit Historical Society and the Detroit Public Library.

Several keynotes and many breakout sessions are planned that focus on Detroit area history as well as session that focus more broadly on local history in Michigan. A new opening keynote, Sojourner Truth: One of Michigan's Most Famous Citizens by Cornell University professor Margaret Washington, has been added to the conference. It is sponsored by the Detroit Public Library and will be held in their auditorium across the street from the WSU campus. Other keynotes include the History of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra by orchestra historian Paul Ganson, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick: the Scandal that Rocked Detroit and the Region by Detroit Free Press reporter M.L. Elrick, and I've Got a Home in Glory Land: A Lost Tale of The Underground Railroad by Dalhousie University professor Karolyn Smardz Frost.

Breakout sessions include:

Somebody needs to go to that session and report back on it.
