Mr. Smith was the first to inject race into the conversation. That was stupid. But it was Ms. Conyers who injected the us vs. "you guys" perspective from almost the very start of the conversation. It has been clear for several years now that Ms. Conyers' worldview is dominated by her knee-jerk adversarial need to protect Detroit from all outsiders, and to protect herself as a strong black woman from the rest of the world that is clearly hell-bent on putting black women in their place. There's no need to work hard to make public policy decisions when you believe that your main job is to remind Detroiters daily that they are victims of pretty much every other political, racial and interest group out there. Gotta protect those jewels. | ||

Unfortunately, Mr. Smith took the bait. It's hard not to when Ms. Conyers is involved. She is a singularly unlikeable person whose vocal tone in public settings is almost always set to a hectoring, combative, "you are an idiot if you don't agree with me" kind of mode. Highly annoying to say the least. Is it possible that she has any friends that aren't sycophants? Mr. Smith has moderated several well-received town hall meetings on race matters on Channel 56 that garnered him some goodwill. His misstep in this interview shows the need for constant care and vigilance when wading into race discussions. | ||

Grocery stores! Who need grocery stores? I guess Detroit doesn't. Malls that people go to and spend money. Owned by people who pay property taxes. Who would want one of those? Ok, malls are a little dated but Detroit could use a lot more of whatever is going on in Oakland county. She needs to realize that to people who pay the majority of property taxes in Detroit are not Detroiters. They are landlords who live elsewhere. So really Cobo was financed by non-residents. | ||

This was a pretty entertaining interview. P.W. kept calling her "madame". Heh. And after she hung up on he ass (she wud at a Doctor's appointment), PW said she was "officially nuts". Now, if he'd only give Granholm the same kind of banana's treatment. And to the contrary of what DETROIT MONICA has to say, the city COULD use a shopping mall or two. Ghettohood is not necessarily something to aspire to. And that's exactly what she aspires to. | ||

Detroit has a shopping mall (or two or three). They're just void of any decent retail (completely unrelated to issues at the CAYMC). You can probably blame the city and suburban residents for that. |
