Fed up with the city and a negligent slumlord, some neighbors and I are talking about painting a rowhouse that burned beyond salvation in May a lovely shade of Tigger orange. Since it worked in other neighborhoods, why not try it in ours. So my questions to the forum: 1. Anyone know where to buy eye-searing orange paint on the cheap? Home Depot is a bit pricey for how much we need and for the purpose. 2. Anyone have a really tall ladder we can borrow? 3. Anyone wanna volunteer for the cause? |

Once the orange paint job is complete, write the words "Beer...Wine...Lotto" to embellish your art work. |

The AAA building on Bagley could use a nice paint job. |

Never painted a building orange however I have worked on similar projects called Firebreak. see here http://www.openarchitecturenet work.org/node/623 http://www.flickr.com/photos/n spiotrowski/3256167547/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =KB87XcMT3TI If paint is out of the price range think creatively for a cheaper way to draw attention to this rowhouse. |

Rhymes, is it the rowhouse at the corner of Bagley & Vinewood? you might want to check the "free paint" place on Michigan Ave. They sell paint for pretty cheap over there. |

Don't know about the Detroit area, but here in Minnesota we can go to our county's recycling center and get paint that has been turned in by someone who no longer need it. |

"Rhymes, is it the rowhouse at the corner of Bagley & Vinewood? " Sure is. We've been fighting with the owner, Ms. Maha Jano, for some time. |

I wish, 1953. I'm a hard-core preservationist (see efforts to save Lafayette Bldg. and Web site), but this one is way too far gone to save. The entire second floor is gutted with no roof let alone a back wall. Fire was pretty bad. |

On a recent visit to Detroit, I drove past to get a photo of it. I almost thought it looked salvageable. But if the back wall is missing well...whatever I guess. A shame, it's a really cool building.[was] |

The Habitat ReStore tends to have good paint and you'll be hitting the housing problem coming and going. I really support the orange paint concept. I feel like it's so easy for all of us to get complacent about the abandoned buildings around us and start to see them as normal or not a big deal. |

Sounds like a swell way to get fined for trespass/vandalism as you simultaneously break your neck while fooling around with an unsafe structure.. Try taking lots of pics and spreading 'em around the web..send some pics to Jenny G. in Lansing..she's just itching to find some way to spend the "porkulus" surplus.

With it being a little chilly as of late, you might want to wait until it warms up a tad. Hard to roll out slushy paint. I'll help, Rhawk, if you've tried everything else, and the place can't be saved... You've proven yourself to be a solid citizen around here so count me in. That sure is a big building though. |

you can also get random leftover colors at any paint store for <$5 a gallon. also, water balloons filled with paint plus a water balloon launcher works for those hard to reach spots. http://s27.photobucket.com/alb ums/c171/harryhood2643/?action =view¤t=paint2.jpg |

On a side note, I'd recomend waiting until a sunny day in spring before painting. when it's this cold, the paint A) doesn't stick B) freezes before it dries C) does not absorb well into the brick since the pores of the brick open up more during the warm weather and constrict during frigid temps (it's not much, but it makes a difference). Great concept, but bad weather timing. |

I don't think "pores" in the brick matter. The building is already painted, but yeah... I know nothing else about temperature and paint. Good luck though. Something should be done about the situation, but I hope whoever owns the property won't show up to your painting party. |

I think Home Depot sells oops paint for pretty cheap. http://www.westnet.com/~andrew /howto-cheappaint.html I wonder if you could get that orange color that hunters wear in the woods. Nobody would miss that. http://www.yoopersteez.com/ima ges/blog/hats/hunter-orange-ha t.jpg FreeCycle might have stuff. I've never looked into it. Craigslist maybe? I believe Lowes also sells paint, as does Walmart. |

Yeah, do that! Uninsured! Without permits! We'll just guess where the bricks fall. Seriously, inform me if you do that so I can video and submit it to one of those websites that pays $600 for people doing silly things. Otherwise, save me some bricks. Come on, Wolverine. If they are already going to do something illegal, what's the difference in painting it or tearing it down manually? I love how you make such a big distinction between the two. |

I already said you wouldn't catch me near them painting. I don't agree with it, but that's their neighborhood, and their decision. I don't live in Detroit....which is interesting.....because I have a nicely bound book from the city called "The Detroit Vacant Property Toolbox." It's 27 pages that tells me how to deal with vacant property in fair to terrible condition, legally. |
