It doesn't get much worse than this: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/ news/story?id=2943095 NEW YORK -- The FBI is investigating allegations that veteran NBA referee Tim Donaghy bet on basketball games over the past two seasons, including ones in which he officiated. Defense attorney John Lauro confirmed Donaghy is under investigation but refused to comment on the allegations or the case. According to a law enforcement official, authorities are examining whether the referee made calls to affect the point spread in games on which he or associates had wagered. Donaghy is perhaps best-known previously as one of the referees in the 2004 game at Detroit that ended with Indiana Pacers players fighting with Pistons fans, among the biggest stains on the league's image in its history. |

Yikes, Donaghy has hired a federal prosecutor who specializes in representing whistleblowers, as his defense attorney. Gambling, mob, and whistleblower are not words you associate with a long life or at least a carefree one for the said blower. This is a bad nightmare X100 for the NBA. |

Now apparently Donaghy is getting death threats. The FBI is investigating and law enforcement is giving him "protection". And the plot thickens..... |

NEW YORK -- Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy plans to plead guilty in federal court on Wednesday to charges alleging he bet on games he officiated. That's according to a person familiar with the betting probe. NBA commissioner David Stern has called the alleged betting scandal the most serious situation he's encountered at the league. Donaghy is to turn himself at Brooklyn federal court. Donaghy's attorney, John Lauro, and federal prosecutors declined to comment. |
