Right now NBC is showing a hockey game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres. The game is being played outside in Buffalo. Did anybody see it? Is this something the NHL has been during lately?

It's a gimmick to get some attention. Obviously NBC thinks it's worth running on New Years Day. The NHL did this once a few years ago in Edmonton with the Oilers playing the Montreal Canadians.

I would have enjoyed watching this, if I weren't distracted by a football game.

One of these days I'll get a DVR, yes.

I thought this was awesome. Buffalo gained alot of my respect as a hockey city.

The snow slowed the puck down enough for Americans (present company excepted) to see it.

It was enjoyable to watch. At 70,000 fans... tickets must have been close to free.

Jrvass,
Avg. ticket price was $75. Cheapest seats were $20. The Lowest 10 rows had the worst sightlines. Cost to put on the game was only about $1 million - 250K for stadium rental, 250K for rink prep and about 500K for marketing, etc.
Game grossed over $6 million, most of which the Sabres get to keep.
By the way overnight ratings were 2.6 which is good for an NHL game but still paltry. (Mich/FLA game drew a 9.9).
