I trust you, I am really liking the patience at the plate, especially from Guillen...he has shown some real poise in the box tonight after that 0-12 slump. |

17-6 now, which is the odds that Miner takes over in the 7th. |

It makes more sense to save Lopez for tomorrow, especially since Rapata is used up. |

I've never been the biggest fan of Grilli, only because he's so inconsistent, but we have to realize when he's pitching well and not be so hard on him. Boo when he sucks, sure, but look at the stats. As of right now (he's not in tonight yet), his last allowed runs were on April 8. Since then, he has appeared in 4 games, with the following line: 8.1 IP, 3H, 0ER, 3BB, 5K I could do without the walks, but that's not a bad stretch. Check out the ERAs of some of the bullpen guys: C. Rapada: 3.2IP, 0.00ERA (before tonight) A. Lopez: 14.1IP, 0.63ERA D. Bautista: 9.1IP, 0.96ERA T. Jones (be still my heart): 8IP, 2.25ERA, 3/3 Svs If the starters would just wake up, I think between Lopez and Bautista (with Rapada thrown in there for lefties), we might have a good 7-8 combo. Also, for the stat geeks, interesting who leads the team in K/9: Bobby Seay. |

Focus: I'm sorry but I'm not buying it. What these stats don't show are how many inherited runners he's let in that don't show up on his ERA? Another walk, this is almost getting painful to watch. I feel sorry for Ron Washington (kinda) |

I like your stats posting. Been following it closely, and sometimes painfully. My take on the pen is similar to yours, but DLing or releasing Miner now is a no-brainer, and for an upgrade Grilli is off the team too. We're stuck with our starters for good or bad right now. If our hitters stay healthy we could see some more productive innings. |

Zitro, true...but there couldn't be TOO many, as he's only given up 3 hits and 3 walks in that time. 7andkelly, yeah, obviously you can't work Lopez and Bautista every night (particularly when the starters struggle to go 6), so someone else other than Rapada has to step up their consistency...what happened to Miner? He used to be fairly dependable, if not outstanding. |

Focusonthed, great stat work there. I think it is important that we point out some of the good things when guys like Grilli & the bullpen do well. It's always easy to bag on a guy when he's taking the gaspipe; look at how people shredded Todd Jones last year when he'd give up a run or lose the game. But on those occasions where Jones did make a save, he was hardly ever praised. Again, I'm not above criticizing this team when it falters but let's also be fair when they do well too. We've also got to realize some of the smaller things as opposed to the ESPN moments as well. |

The tech team was hard at work trying to get double digits in the scoreboard's run column for the 6th inning. |

That was awesome when I saw that on Sportscenter. Simiar to high school gym scoreboards commonly not being able to do triple digits, I guess no one planned for double-digit run innings. |

Very strange season. Granderson looks like he hasn't missed a game. Bonderman has poor command again but only gives up 2 hits. If 3 of the 5 starters get consistent with this hitting we'll be in good shape. Glad to see Germain pitching decent. He may have overcome his "mental" control problems. If he can't stick in that bullpen he never will. |

If Poly can ever get it going who knows what this offense can do. It will be interesting to see how they respond to a top flight pitcher. They sure didn't face any this series. |

ball is fun in D again. My biggest problem remains that our thinnest position (pitching, all flavors) is also our thinnest part in the minors. Despite making several big trades Dombrowski still has a pretty fair amount of infield talent in the minors. That's kind of surprising but Dombrowski has used a lot of high choices for P and infield (P has been largely traded). Big problem is that pitching is thin both with the Tigers but also down on the farm. We should see Porcello up with the Tigs in say Aug '09. Lot of good infield like Sizemore, Iorg, Worth, etc. Tigs need another great June draft. |

I'm not worried in the long run about the pitching in the farm system. The Tigers will reload there through the draft. Keep in mind that there are a few guys on the Tigers roster now that should be in the minors but are filling in for injured pitchers. When Willis, Zumaya, and Rodney comeback, Gallaraga, Rapada, and another pitcher (Bautista?) will head back down to the minors. In Toledo you have Neal, Cruceta, Ostland, Lambert, Bonine, Fossom, and Larrison who are all under 30 and have started the year with ERAs of 3 or less. With all the pitchers that were traded in the offseason, it is important for these guys to step up now that they've had a chance to advance in the organization. If they can continue to put up good numbers and improve, The Tigers will once again have a deep organizational pitching staff. |
