JC: There seemed to be a a few streets near Balduck that 7 and Kelly Kid and I would cut down on our bikes to get to Kerby rd and eventually to the lake... short streets, yes, obscure. Ashley being one of them.

I used to ride Moross right out to the lake, sometimes cutting over after I got into the pointes. If I wanted to get to my sister over on Lakepointe, I'd go over Nottingham or Balfour and over the expressway and down the side streets past Harper and Cadieux, almost to Jefferson near Alter.

JC: If I recall correctly there was a pedestrian bridge over 94 at the end of Casino st that Kid and I would cross instead of taking Moross. We thought it was a "safer" route. In retrospect, the Moross route may have been safer...not all the drivers paid attention when crossing Casio...anyway that was always a neat adventure to the lake and Kid's bro rented a carriage house in the pointes on Kerby...a great stop and of course the ride up... and down the Balduck hill was a must.

The Balduck hill was made for show. Sledding, tobogganing and just sliding down.

Eastwood: Ashley is one of the original sites for what became known as In Between the Houses Wiffle League. The game was two persons per team ... baseball size wiffle ..... and a 30 " bamboo bat... fast pitch and no running ... either a HR /single .... One wiffe strike is an out and a fly or grounder caught was out ... so the 40' wide lots made for a tight competitive game .....

Wiffle continues here on the West coast every Thursday night ... First pitch is 6:33 ...it has become a cross generational game with basically the same rules .... It has two pre / boomers, boomers, gen-Xer's, and one millennial playing ... they are physical therapist, group sales ticket manager for the Sharks, special educators, 5th grade teachers, 1st grade teacher, company sales reps, real estate attorney, psychologists, restaurant owner, and a NHL hockey player. No resumes needed (sorry 7 but it is so easy to take a shot at you that I couldn't resist ... forgive me in your prayers for me and how are you feeling? sorry I should have asked that first) and the field dimensions are 120 ' down the Left field line and 93 ft to center..... I'm pitching tomorrow so my class gets out early ..... so if you have any Wiffle stories or unique rules for the game .... let me know.....

ES: Wiffle ball on Eastwood was on the Redmond corner. The baselines ran along the concrete expansion joint line.... home plate was on the north west corner (1st base heading toward Mrs. Iola's corner..the southwest corner). Home plate either a piece of cardboard or someone threw a mitt down (although we didn't use gloves for fielding)....ptcher's mound was in the very center of the intersection. 4 balls, 3 strikes, sometimes, depending on the number of players, certain certain fields were out. The black top was also used for wiffle ball....the basket ball fence along 7Mi served as the backstop while the alley side served as the homerun fence. Full plastic balls as well as rubber balls (sometime actual hardballs) were used too.

Nice job in keeping an Eastwood tradition going.

KR: thanks ... the game was modified on Mapleridge too... the lots were narrow but ran 140 ft ..... still no base running but the garage at the back of the lot was the target. It was also played in the mid 60's inside the gym at the Hamilton School over off of Chandler park Drive ... it was a great game for the kids in the federally funded program for inner city children ..... batter in the center of the gym and the whole back wall of the gym was like playing at Fenway .... another CA version is to bat at the pitchers mound and the back stop cage is used .... plastic bats and softball size wiffles seemed to be the norm ....if it missed the cage on the fly it also was an out .... tough rules made for tight games .... I wonder if 7 ever played???? maybe he will calm down and let me know if he ever did????

ES: There were different versions of wiffle ball too back on Eastwood..sometimes there wasn't baserunning. Also, there seemed to be different types of wiffle balls...some had harder plastic can could go much farther and faster. Anyway, it was/is a great game for a lot of kids (and adults) with a limited amount of space. Now if your really want to get a eastside tradition going introduce curb ball. Out of curiosity is anyone familiar with curb ball in the SJ area. Was if played on Eastwood or Mapleridge during your era?

KR: I remember after they put the fence around the tennis courts at Heilmann you could always find a stray tennis ball or two outside the fence area. If you were lucky you would find a fairly new ball which was better for home runs, which on our street was the mine lawn of the house across the street from the curb you were playing against.

The middle crack in the street to the opposite curb was a single, the grass area between the street and sidewalk was a double. The opposite sidewalk was a triple.

The key was to play in front of a neighbors house that were okay with you running on their lawn.

We played street ball with a softball, bats and gloves. The plate was a crack in the road in front of my house, 1st was the sewer grate in front of Coughlin/Mazzola's house, 2nd was a crack in front of Weiss's house, and 3rd was the opposite sewer grate in front of my god-mother's house, so we had no problem with lawns. I still have a scar on my arm from sliding across concrete that had been recently replaced, and grooved. That was ugly.

We also played Whiffle ball in the Bradley's back yard with the big fat yellow bat and plastic ball. I was a lousy athlete and was always getting hit with a ball. The one thing I learned is that plastic stings.

KR, I more than likely tripped on a shoe lace and went head first across the cement, so I guess you could say it was a head first slide.

Eastwood: curb ball was played on Eastwood and Mapleridge ... sometimes we would not use the curb but the front steps. There are no curbs in my town ... actually no street light either ... so we have gone back to this wiffle game. It has an 9 week season over the summer and one of the players is the owner of a restaurant in San Jose called the Poor House Bistro. So the final game "All Star" Game is actually played in his parking lot ... which is good since he blocks off the lot which is confusing to his customers - there is beer on tap in the lot for the game ... his food is available ... and a HR is off the wall of Power Play Hockey which is next door to the Poor House .... fun for all the players and people going into the restaurant sometimes hang around to see the action of this great game. We use the official softball size wiffle ball - holes only on the one side ( a case usually lasts the season) and the fat bats and famous yellow small bats ... What amazes me is when in conversation with someone about things they have done as a child the number of people who KNOW wiffle ball and have played the game in some form..... 7 it is hot out here today and the game will start tonight around 6:35 - I am thinking about you and glad that you are feeling better ... way to go!

ES, good to know our prayers worked, and you're okay. Be careful out there today, and have fun. Weatherunderground.com shows there is an excessive heat warning and ozone action alert out in your area, so bring along enough bottled water and Powerade.

We're looking 82 with a chance of participation later in the afternoon.

7: I play on a team called the Projects .... not because we need work ... so I am pitching tonight ... mickey Lolich lefty style ... and I need to get Jon Cheechoo of the Sharks out , then the Group sales manager for the sharks next and then Mindy (5th grade tchr) who can park the ball deep .... I am glad that you have not checked into the St Johns psych ward because of these threads .... I will post tonight score at 11 PT ....

Thanks for sharing your world view and political leanings with us ES. I'm sure it's all important to you, and it's flattering you think we might care. Feel free to continue to share, though, on the off chance someone else might find it interesting.

No offense intended, but I won't let your stated opinions alter my independent decisions at the poles...partly but I don't care what you think, but beyond that you have no integrity with me. Like you said, we don't know each other. Again, no offense is intended here.

All that said, I hope you are having a nice day. What was the final score?

ES: Wow! This 7&K is one angry individual...sounds like he needs to spend some time with Nurse Rachett!

We got dumped today in the senior league...I was looking at a triple with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth when the centerfielder made a Willie Mays catch on me...couldn't believe it...that was the longest ball I've hit this year...some of the old farts pull some old athletic abilities out of the bag every once in awhile.

Sounds like you've got a great place for wiffle ball...I'm betting that JC took you downtown...and likely so did Ms. Fifth Grade! Who did they bring in to pitch relief with one out in the first inning and the score 23-0?

There was a front page story in the Times today about a bunch of kids trying to build a wiffle ball field on a vacant lot in Greenwich, CN...lawyers, government, parents, neighbors, etc...all had to get involved. Remember the days when we had a vacant lot...set up the bases...right field out...and played ball all day...with no adults involved. That was before we were allowed to go as far as Heilmann...or to Columbus to play on the cinders.

Boy GB, if "I hope you are having a nice day" sounds angry to you, how do you react when people around you tell you to "eat shit, and die". That must give you fits.

I actually respect the way you are trying to carry ES's mail, but like I said before there was no offense intended.

Today is indeed a golden day! Enjoy it.
