Z, so now we know the pharmacy name. good sleuthing. You make me proud. Now, can we determine if it was called Beno's because they sold anti gas medications? |

That will be your assignment when you return or maybe we can dump that off on CFG too. |

That would be BEANO'S. Glad you made it in safely, JC. Have a great time with the kids. |

Z: Great detective work! Too bad you didn't record your phone conversation to the current owners. Now that you know it was Beno's, do you remember that name? I don't. I get the whole gnawing thing. The school tunnel was driving me nuts, and of course Chatham Village. That reminds me there is a document at the HW Library waiting for me to read. J/Z, I do hope the corn transfer is successful on the return trip. I plan to drive all the way to Almont to pick it up! Let me know what day. Thanks much! |

7-Not really but I knew it was another name, maybe because like KR, Merit was my usual haunt. I only remember going there when we would drop off film. It seemed they were cheaper/faster than Merit. |

Our film usually went to Revco. Both were a good place to test tubes...not as good as Olsen's though. |

Also, Merit had the TV tube tester. That was my Dad's hangout. He was constantly testing those things. I don't know how he would occupy himself today with all the electronics that don't have tubes. Probably test batteries |

Z, the corn was gone from the mail hooks. You damned Iowans are quick. Also, I saw that you were talking about me. Goofing off, was I? At least the neighborhood bullies are leaving you boys alone. |

http://www.lakergroup.com/defa ult.aspx?pid=548&lst=166 Z: 15551 Fordham was the home of the Gibsons. They lived on at what at that time was considered a large colonial home for the area on wider lot because it wedged off the alley near Morang. The Gibsons had several children that attended SJS (I went to school with Nancy 67), Regina, and the early days of NDHS. The dad worked for AAA insurance and eventually became one of the executive officers. The ad you posted from the crown was probably related to his insurance business. The above picture does no justice to how nice that home was when it had awnings, several trees and shrubs. |

I meant Merits and Revco had the tube testers. I don't remember the Beno name at all, but we went there when it was a Sav-on. I wonder if that store was one of the first Sav-ons and also if it was called something else after Beno and before Sav-on. Loved the Bridigare Hardware Store...nothing like scooping up a handful of screws and dropping them back into the can. And I think they had a few door bell buttons you could push to test them out (I took full ownership over that process)...Wards basement surely did...and Sears on Moross and Mack. |

The Gibson's didn't have any kids in my grade, but I remember them...and the Skrentnors...both good St. Jude Parish families! Those lots adjacent the alleys were quite spacious. |

Here I though all the slackers were defying tradition & were hard at work but 7 came through. Way to go,7. Our honor has been upheld. Not that I'm doing much work. Just had nothing to say. Speaking of Wards @ 7 & Gratiot. They used to sell Lambretta motorscooters. I would have killed for one of those. Cooler, to me, than a Cushman Eagle. Does that presage my preference for BMWs (foreign) over Harleys (So-called American)? |

Nice win. Nice baserunning by the Birds. Nice glove work by Inge. Question - How come Sheffield, Cabrerra, Renteria and even Maggs don't run out ground balls? One day the first baseman is going to bobble a throw and have time to recover because they aren't hustling. Oh and nice job as always Jonesy. I lost my signal with the bases loaded to add to the excitement. |

CFG: I know you've got nothing else to do but chase down ghosts for us but I have another request and it shouldn't require too much of your time. Next time you're at the church can you see if you can get access to the old choir room in the basement? Specifically the back room (most northern). The choir finished the room off, we use to keep our surplus and cassocks in there and would have coffee etc, after the mass. My mother painted a picture for the room of some cherubic looking choirboys who looked like the cat who swallowed the canary. Can you see by chance if it's still hanging in there? Thanks! |

Oh and one more thing while you're there. There used to be a garden in between the church and the rectory. You have to go inside the vestibule off the altar and down the steps and about halfway down there's door leading to the rectory and there a small garden area. This might be something other's have never seen or knew about. Some pics on FB would be nice. I guess while you're at it if you can have a Fantasy pizza delivered to Iowa it would be greatly appreciated. (Message edited by zitro on July 18, 2008) |

Seems that things get pretty quiet around here when the ladies aren't around to keep us on our toes. At least 7 & Z are trying to keep the flame burning. C'mon, Slackers, tell us what's going on. It bothers me to think that my friends may be so overworked that they can't chime in. |

Z: Wasn't the choir locker room area the same area that the altar boys kept their cassocks and surpluses? The lockers were located right off the bottom of the stairs that led up to the rectory patio and eventually the sacristy. It seemed back in the day there was always a warning about not "borrowing" cassocks from the choir side of the lockers and vice versa for the choir. There were a few times when "flood" cassocks had to do or sometimes you'd be tripping because they were too long. The "borrowing" ocurred especially at the 10:30 High Mass. I hope the statute (or in this case the statue) of limitations is up. 7_and_Kelly_Kid can probably remember the cassock wars during the mid 60s era. (Message edited by kellyroad on July 18, 2008) |

EB, you are very perceptive. Z, hopefully you're keeping a list of all Cfg's assigned tasks. Between the relics and all the nooks and crannies you've pointed out, I can't wait to get myself and my SDVC into the Church. |

Z: When Cabrera's dogging it on the base paths we understand because we're just happy his bat's in the lineup, and we don't want him tweaking his injury...no excuse for the others. |

Another question to the SJ group: The inquiry about Beno Pharmacy prompted this question. Are there any places that you lived right by or passed thousand of times within in the St. Jude area and just never been inside or frequented. Example: I've been in Jays Paperstation (Chatham Inn) a few times but NEVER in Werner's Rosewood Lounge (and Frank Werner was in my class for 12 yrs) and NEVER in the Candlelight Lounge (except for the cigarette machine photo) ..both of these establishments right across the street from Jay's Also, Never in Aldos (a four star Italian restaurant right under our noses) expect long after I moved, I went back for an anniversary dinner. Eastburn: Didn't Wards also carry Riverside motorcycles? |

KR: My recall was the "borrowing" of the garments only lasted a few years until the choir guys got tired of having to wear tattered and torn cassocks and surpluses, That's when the choir fixed up that back room and installed their own closets for storage and kept it locked. Our surpluses were a different style too so we could tell if they were swiped by one of "those" altar boyz. 7: I know why Carbrera takes it easy but it seems like he could run a little harder, but what do I know. EB: Did you blast one of those air horns to wake everyone up? JC is still goofing off somewhere, must be nice. |

I was never in that space craft looking building The Colonial Bank. My parents did all their shopping at NBD, where I tried to sell my Wish Egan tickets in front of. |

Here's my NBD story: When I was 7 or 8 an uncle gave me a pair of binoculars for my birthday. They had just added the drive-up window to the NBD. The brick facade to the drive up had alternating bricks which made it easy to climb up to the top of the building. A friend and I decided to go up on top of the building with the binocs to see how far down Kelly we could see. It's night time and were just sitting there on the top front side of the building with our feet dangling down the front. Well, our legs were silhouetted by the light of the NBD sign. Next thing I know the HW cops are on top of the building with guns drawn. We get escorted home in a police car and the whole neighborhood is wondering what's going on. We couldn't have had more innocent intentions, but that sure wised me up in a hurry. My parents I think were laughing too hard about it to dish out any punishment. About 2 months later the bank filled the voids in the bricks so this couldn't happen again. |

Number one, I am not goofing off. I am playing grandma today. Myra is now down for her nap, so I can come out and play for a few. KR, my sister was Ken Werner's steady girl for 3 years back in HS. they were going to be engaged when he went to California for a vacation, and thet broke up. Frank and I were going to stand up in the wedding together. I was very disappointed. I must have moved or else it was off my radar, but I never was in Jay's Paper Station, or the dry cleaner on the corner right by Aldo's. We always took our dry cleaning to the one next to the Candle-lite. Also, I used to get pizza at Famous Pizza/Bakery next to the Rosewood, and I took piano briefly at Amato's next to that, but never was in the dentist office on the corner. Used to get shoes at Mueller's but was never in Pinky's Pro Shop next to that, either. |

Having Colonial on the corner of Eastwood made it an intregal part of out Eastwoodian lives. From the time it was just a field all through construction and hanging out all over it. The clock on the the sign was ALWAYS good for timing my exit or return from work (or other points beyond).................. |
