I guess I was more referring to time more than anything, to sit at a store all day and read a whole book, I don't think I have the attention span.

7: Paul Clemens is a 91 grad..actually cites some ND teachers in the book. You of all people (our king of east side documentary) have got to read the book. There are some chapters where the author waxes philosophically about modern black authors, race relations, and recent Detroit politics but a good deal is very reminiscent of the old St. Jude/Heilmann/NDHS/northeast neighborhood.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a ND/Regina thread here - or did I miss something? Would it have to be in the "Non-Detroit" section?

That had to be the most confusing run of posts that we've ever had.
Are the Tigers getting waxed at Wimpy's while reading a book about the east side, or are they fishing with the sheriff in Lexington so they can eat hot dogs at a car show??

Just experimenting with the new Cuil search engine (suppose to compete with google)...the top has an excerpt from a SJS 2nd grader in 63...perhaps one of you SJ threadsters know the name.

Mark Fedenis was in our class. I don't clearly remember him, but I know Z does.
Z, check out the msnbc link above.

Mark was the Gus Polinski of our class, one damn fine accordion player. I believe they lived on Coram between Redmond and Rex. He had a brother I think was a year younger and maybe a younger sister too.

The last book I read non stop, cover to cover was the great environmental tome "The Lorax" by Dr. Theodor Geisel

Z, have you delved into 'Yertle the Turtle' yet. It's another classic by Dr. Geisel, and should be added to your summer reading list.

Is it as thought provoking and as forward thinking as the The Lorax? If so, next time I'm at the beach I'll have it with me (seems appropriate)

It's a modern day study of autocracy and bigotry. I believe the President may have read this thought provocing piece in his lead up to the war in Iraq. Yurtle, King of the Turtles, appears to be the Saddam Hussein of the Turtle Kingdom

Sounds like it's right up my literary alley.
Speaking of alleys, these were a lot like some of the streets that we never ventured, some seemed to have an aura that you shouldn't walk down them because they weren't yours even though they were public domain.

Unless there was a purposeful shortcut (like to get to Geroge's party store) going down an alley did seem at times like you were "sneaking around" and "up to no good".....kind of felt you were under the radar.....What could you do?....maybe find an empty bottle or two (for a 2 cent return) and perhaps challenge your cohort to hitting an object in the distance with a rock (usually a trash can or an electric transformer)

Z: What street(s) gave you the aura like they weren't yours?

Collingham & Bringard for sure. I don't think I knew anyone who lived on those streets and I sure wasn't welcome in their alleys.

Are you asking about the big words just in case they don't have them you can recommend it to Kookla, Fran & Ollie on the ES thread?

There are plenty of really, really big words there.....just check the resumes. Have you read the insightful, riveting, and inspirational expose on horse mannerisms? It's a must read...Skip the beach, go to a coffee house with a slouch couch (btw, bring a dictionary) and just spend a few relaxing hours with this masterpiece.

Z:Collingham always seemed like the "ritzy" street with all those bigger colonial homes.

If our conversations and input ever get that stale we can officially claim this thread dead. We don't want to be like Jonesy and have to have the rug pulled from under us.
