I'm glad to hear of no serious injuries. This could have been much worse! More stations need to be in service! My prayers to the FFs and their families.

This toppling happens every few years. My Dad used to come home early due to a crane tipping over and the workers being sent home for the day, and he'd laugh - but be worried to death at the same time. Well, that's how I felt. Pretty funny in a way, but the report I saw dramatized the whole event.

So - how DOES his happen? Bad suspension? Heavy gas peddle?

Hope all are well.

Question regarding the rollover: were any of the crew belted in? Back in my Dad's day no one was belted so they could get in and out quickly. Just wondering if safety regulations now require safety belts.

AGES ago, my Dad had DFD band practice the night his rig (E56??) slid on ice and flipped. I believe that a couple of guys were killed and I remember one FF named Andre who had severe head injuries.

Didn't a firefighter tillman stand up as the tiller rig was leaving a house on a run and hit his head on the door? I think he was killed.

Mtm: Dad says the guys rarely buckle up. There are belts in the front and back.

My dad was a tillerman way back when he first started and the number one rule is DON'T STAND UP! Now, they have caps on the bucket.

D.F.D. : WOW ! Dosen't seem like two years.
Have you seen the new photos on
detroitfirefighters.net ?
Ffdfd : I am glade they broke the mold.
I don't think I could live with
two Dannies.Did he ever get the submarine?
Saw you accosting civilians at 7 mi.
a few weeks back.
Ggores: I am going with "heavy peddle ".
Confirmed working fire. 44 could see it
from quarters.Theese guys don't hold
back.
Mtm: They should have been belted in.After
the E.17 accident seat belt use was
emphasized. All rigs are four man cabs.
Shortly after Joe Torkos was killed a young
Windsor firefighter was killed in an accident.Windsor rigs now confirm the run and
all personal belted in.E.56's accident was
Nov.9,1963.Albert Booth was killed.Ted
Andre was seriously injured. In looking up
E.56's accident I found a picture of Sq.1
on it's back.Happened on February of 1962.
Two years back avoiding a driver, who kept
cutting them off,L.30 flipped on it's side.
Ray: Thanks for that photo. I didn't see the
"FREEP".
Buyamerican: Michael Johnson L.11 killed when he
raised out of the tiller seat, not
realizing he hadn't cleared the
ceiling beam.
"Teech" You are right. Being Detroit Fighters
the consuming thought is get there and go
to work. Now more than ever with the
manpower situation.Tillers are rare now.
most rigs are rear mounts. In your dad's
day the tillerman was the hardest working
guy on the rig.

Tony, Those are good pictures at dff.net. It also looks like there are newer pictures in the classic firehouses section.

Does anyone know why Chief 5 is calling for a helicopter on the radio. The traffic is when the DFF webpage is loading. Also the radio is back up incase one didn't know.

Welcome Back ! Missed you.I don't know how much
radio traffic is on the page. Ch.5 planned
a two pronged attack on this fire. A
helicopter for an aerial attack, and a
submarine for water torpedoes from below.
New tactics for reduced manpower.

Ok, so it won't take you to the detroit page. Page down to apparatus by fire department, click it, go to page 2, scroll down to Detroit.

DetroitTeacher, Thanks for the confirmation!

BuyAmerican, Yes, YEARS back, I believe at Headquarters, the tillerman DID stand up and was killed and that IS part of the reason that they have a cap now.

Can someone tell me if Eng 35 was ever housed in the quarters of Eng 28? The Website has them at RUSSELL & EAST GRAND BLVD in 1911. However this is in the backyard of Eng 28 at Milwaukee & RIOPELLE 1905. Thanks

Lansingfire, Go to Google maps and type in 82 Garfield St. If you look at the satellite view and street view, you can see a common hall way that connects each building.

I love the old stations. The history that goes along with headquarters is great. I know there's not a lot of need for the guys downtown, but still would love to see E1, L1, & S1 run out of there. Or throw in a Museum that would be great.
