I guess you had a few years on me!

I lived on Novara between Hayes and Gratiot, but went to school with Aaron and we used to hang out around the church all the time.

Haven't thought or seen them in years.

We moved out in 73, and I've only seen them a few times. My sister still gets a Christmas card from Yvonne, I think. They were a really nice family. I wonder if Don was still living with his mom, or if she'll have to move now.
Back when he was a teenager, Don used to play in a jug band with some other friends of my sister's. You may not know what that is, but it was a 'thing' in the late 60's. Kind of folk/country music made with a washboard, banjo, jug and 'gut-bucket'. I think Donny was on jug or washboard.

That sounds about right. when he was our Cub Scout pack leader, he used to tell stories of his band as I recall.

P.S., I know what a jug band is, I'm not that young!!!

Hey, anyone born after I graduated High School is young. Ergo, you are young. But I'm glad you know what a jug band is.
I had heard that Don got a job out in California at one point, but I don't know when or if he's back here from that. Try the link, and see if someone responds. I'll bet someone will. I left a message for the family.

At the most, Detroit.

Mkap, whoever you are, I see you are a friend of Cfg and Z and J. That's good enough for me.

I hope you will decide to visit often and chime in. It has been a real treat for me personally the past few months reconnecting to St. Jude's via this forum, sharing our experiences, and meeting some new friends, albeit somewhat anonymously.

Thanks Kellyroad.

I love to read memories from my old stomping grounds.

Makes me feel like I'm not the only one waxing nostalgia.

Speaking of the Detroit Zoo, I am still waiting on a refund for my Elephant Key which I was told was "good for life". I can't believe they just yanked the boxes out of there.

Love the animals though. The penguinarium is my favorite, and the giraffes, polar bears, tigers, elephants, ostriches...

Too bad they put up that huge brick wall along I696. I would much rather listen to the animals than the road noise.

I used to love golfing at Rackham right next to the zoo. You could hear a lot of the animals while golfing, kind of different. Those damn Macaws would always cackle in my backswing though.

It's the hyenia's in your foursome that are really annoying.

glad to see the "newby's" on the forum. welcome!
ok, the station i listen to at work is now playing all christmas songs. got me remembering. one family tradition during christmas was to go to the conversatory at belle isle. they had one room they did up special for the holidays. used to think it was a huge igloo when i was a kid - get some snow out there and it looked kind of eerie for a kid. also remember one christmas the folks made us go to bed early so santa could come. before we fell asleep, i swear to this day i heard jingle bells and the following morning, someone took a sled and drug it through most of the houses on our block - snow was pretty deep, so as kids, we thought he really was there. so many good memories of the neighborhood, as well as midnight mass at church.

kellyroad, i heard that - what a shame. where has all the money the casinos were supposed to pump into the city gone, or is that a sore subject? another good christmas memory was going to eastland before it was enclosed and seeing santa. didn't they also have a radio station broadcast from there, wwj or wjr? and, happy birthday CFG and sis!!!!

Wasn't there a story recently about a cactus that was over 100 years old that finally died from people carving their initials in it at the conservatory, I think it was done by Professor Plum with the candlestick.

Several of the palms got too large for the dome in the conservatory, so they had to be cut down and removed. There was no alternative like transplanting or whatever. Fortunately they had some donation that is allowing them to replace the trees with a different type of palm.

Franks was a great store. I wonder if they just tried too hard to be like the big box stores. Miss that one...that's for sure.

Used to walk over there, actually, and to Revco. Revco was great for film development, scripts, bandaids in those sturdy reusable hinged metal boxes, bactine, mercurochrome, aspirin, cigars and tobacco, and my favorite, tube testing.

tube testing, we took ours to Merit drugs on kelly. i heard a while back that someone in nashville's father died, leaving his tube case - he was a tv repairman. he checked the value of the case and it was i think high $100's. he decided to keep it all.

Speaking of Merits, does Joe Ricci still own car dealerships in the area. He used to work at Merits along with most of his family too.
