Nice Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings' OT win at the Joe last night against the Calgary Low Flames. Karen Newman was in fine voice for both anthems. Budd Lynch's voice is always great to hear. Mo Cheese has perfected the Curly Shuffle. Gordy was in the building signing "9". Conklin was stellar, and our skaters found their legs in time for a classic come from behind victory. The sweet replica championship rings they were giving out at the door were icing on the cake!

You went 7? I watched that game and thought they were dead in the water. Nice win!!!

KR: Not sure where the Balkan Bakery reference came from, I'll have to do some digging around as I know there was one in the area.

Yes. I was there. The Calgarians generally play well against us, but they spent all they had early in the game. It's amazing Conklin only let in two goals in the first. SOGs against are still an issue, but I like what I see so far in my Wings.

Wasn't the Balkan Bakery on Morang by the Pagoda Chinese restaurant and Indian Village cleaners - or was that the Wooden Shoe Bakery?

cfg, I think that might have been the Wooden Shoe Bakery. What we really need right now is a Detroit Phone book circa 1965!

While we on the subject of food, does anyone remember the name of the diner on Kelly, a block or two south of Denby. My dad used to stop on his way home for burgers from there when he wanted to give my mom a break from the kitchen.

Oh, and I've got another guess on 22. Is that what used to be fish/aquarium shop on 7 mile just west of Kelly, across from Calcaterra's?

Tsomyak: No on 22, but not a bad guess. The roof line looks similar though.

Hint: roof color and part of the sign in the upper right of the picture

It is interesting even within the small confines of our own neighborhoods how we stayed with one set of shops or businesses. IE. those in the blue section closer to Casino know very well the bakeries, hardware stores, cleaners, restaurants etc on Morang. Even though our family was almost equidistant from the Morang shopping area as compared to the Morang shops, Kelly road became the go to place. We passed the Morang businesses thousands of times but with the exception of Chathams on Mornang/Kelly we hardly every frequented the Morang businesses.

Cfg: Wasn't the Wooden Shoe Bakery on Morang near Riad on the Chatham side of the street?

7: My son ended up going to that Calgary game and reported what a great game it was.

Z: If anyone can figure out where the Balkan Bakery was it's you. Between your matchbook covers, phone lists, and old ads, sure there is something on the Balkan Bakery.

There's a Balkan Bakery in Flint and a Balkan Banquet Hall in Centerline, and a Balkan Meat Mkt on Van Dyke in Detroit. Maybe they went into the catering business

Yes, KR - correct on the Wooden Shoe Bakery. Even as a Cherry Section resident - we traveled more down Morang to "Chatham", "Sapphire Gifts", mom went to "Kay's Beauty Parlor", I worked at Indian Village Cleaners and we always got carry out from Pagoda - and Dad always got Mom flowers at Morang Drive Greenhouse. I think because we only had one car, and everything was walking or bicycling distance, it was less "busy" going down Morang - or down Kelly south to the Civic Show, Sanders, Mariannes, Winklemans, Cunninghams, Papes House of Gifts, etc.,

#15: Supreme Drugs was at Hayes and Fordham. Thanks to jc for this one, your '51 SJ Calendar had an ad for them. Funny thing is, once I saw the ad I remembered the place. As a kid we used to venture over there on our bikes, on the belief they had a better selection of comics than our usual haunt, Merit Drugs on Kelly.

cfg, you mention all those places in my old stomping ground. you are right, back then most families had one car and the way the neighborhoods were set up, you could either get where you wanted to go by bike or leather sole express - can't do that with the way subdivisions are set up now. more places on morang were the mg dealership, sommers funeral home who used to give out pencils and small loaves of bread on halloween (through the back door by the way), joe's tick tock market, gooch's barber shop and ross drugs, were the comics were great, they would develop film back in the day of white borders, and the "adult" magazines were on the other side of the candy rack. still remember angelo who owned it. them definitely were the days.

Was Ross drugs at Morang and Whitehill? That was another good place for comics, bought my share of baseball cards there too! There was also the Old Colony beer store, I remember them giving away hot dogs on the 4th, and the owner shooing us kids away after we'd been back multiple times. I also remember the A&W Root Beer place on Morang. I sure could go for a Papa burger and float about now....

There was also a shoe repair place on Whitehill, right next to the drugstore. Anyone remember the name? And don't forget Dex Walter's bar on the corner of Lansdowne and Morang. My dad walked me down there bought me my first drink there when I became of age. There was another beer store next to Dex Walters, but don't remember the name of that one. That was the closest to my house, and hence my favorite for penny candy runs.

ross drugs was on that corner, the shoe place was Frank's Shoe Repair - Frank DeSantis - old crotchedy guy, but did great work. who can forget all the flowers outside al's car wash? going down morang on that side was georgjo's repair - lawnmowers, etc. Old colony and the next 2 places I don't remember. I do remember the owner of Old Colony one summer grew a tomato plant in front of the store just to show the kids in the neighborhood weren't hoodlums. Dex Walter's was a hang out for me and my dad, and I can't remember the name of the other place. tsomyak, do we know each other? you and i lived in the same area and i was only a year older than you. Doug muir owned the Standard station across the street for years, and his wife helen was a waitress at kavans when i worked there.

Kavan's!!! I rediscovered them recently on a trip back. They're now on 12 and Hayes. Burgers, onion rings and french onion soup are still top notch, and my wife would kill for that brownie sundae with the hot Sander's fudge.

I remember Frank was kind of surly as well. He certainly didn't appreciate a bunch of noisy kids hanging around his shop. I remember there was a kind of a breezeway next to his door that lead back to the alley. We used to love to tear through there on our bikes. Why, I have no idea, but it seemed great fun at the time, much to Franks consternation, I'm sure.

Laing, I checked your address, it looks like you were on east side of the street, closer to Casino, yes? I remember the Roehrigs and Brownlees on that block, they both had kids in my class at SJS and ND. Roehrig would have been close to you, but the other side of the street. I remember they had a white birch tree in the front yard. Brownlees were on the opposite side from you as well, but much closer to Moross.

TS: Good job on the Supreme Drug location. They were actually located on Fordham off of Hayes...truly a neighborhood pharmacy. They couldn't have been more than 200 feet from Revco.

The businesses on Morang we use to frequent were actually located near St. Brendan. Pecar Electronics, Kavans and Baskin Robinson 31 Flavors. Pecars had all the high-end electronics you could only dream about, Kavans of course with the great burgers and french onion soup, and back in the day 31 choices of ice cream was unheard of. (Rocky road was my first choice). Kavans at one time had locations at both the Morang and 12 mile locations.

I must confess my ignorance. Where was Brown Dairy located?
