See if you can get your Dad to shovel a path down to Redmond for you. He'll do it! |

I remember the days I was only allowed to "free range" from Kelly to Beaconsfield, and Moross to Morang. In fourth grade I was finally allowed to travel back and forth to school on my own, on my bike no less! Talk about freedom! The next summer we were taping fishing rods and tackle boxes to our bikes and striking out for the lake. Never did catch anything worth keeping, (I'm sure mom was just a glad, lol) but that never stopped us. |

I know a Linda Murphy in Almont, but her husband isn't Mike. So I guess the short answer would be no. Sorry |

Gunna go out hitching tonight. Hope I don't lose another glove on the bumper like I did last time!! For those of you who don't remember or don't know, hitching is hiding behind a parked car near an intersection, waiting for a passing car and grabbing the bumper and going for a slip slidin ride in the snow. But watch out for those dry spots on the road... ouch! (Message edited by mkap on December 19, 2008) |

Mkap, thanks for bringing up the memory of hitching, one of my favorite adventures as a kid. We really thought we were bulletproof, didn't we? I never even considered it to be very dangerous. Conditions had to be just right, though. Firmly packed down snow & (hopefully) no bare spots. I never did know, or hear of, anyone getting hurt hitching. Did any of you? Maybe I'll go out & try it today. Of course, I've got a 2 mile walk to get to where there's any traffic & that takes me to M25 with a 55MPH speed limit. Maybe not. |

hey z, you want some cheese with that wine? hitching, i remember a kid in our neighborhood who was doing it and his legs went under the car. i was outside at the time and when it happened, he screamed bloody murder, wasn't hurt, but ran home all the same. that was the only time i ever knew of an incident - nothing ever happened when i did it. |

Just to let you know, Balduck park is still a great place to go on a snowy Friday night. I happened to be in town with my son and a friend of his a few years back (2003?). We were up for the holidays, and with both kids being native Texans, they were hyped about the snow that fell that day (must've been about 6 inches or so.) I went digging through my folks garage, and sure enough, there was my snow saucer and "snurfer" (a 60's version of a snow board). We piled into the car and headed for Balduck. The place was brightly lit, and it was packed! There were a couple of guys with snow mobiles, and the kids conned them into pulling them on the snow saucer. We must have been out there for a couple of hours. A trip to White Castle topped of a perfect snowy Motor City evening. |

EB, Laing - I guess we were some of the original tailgaters eh? Somehow I think I like doing it the new fashioned way better these days... can't crouch like I used to, or run when they spotted you. I used to be one of the fastest kids in school, now I'm not even the fastest kid in my house, and we're empty nesters. (Message edited by mkap on December 19, 2008) |

In my day we could still hitch behind the horse-drawn Twin Pines milk wagon. Not very exciting. We didn't have the horse-drawn delivery in my neighborhood but my Uncle (on Courville) did. |

When we went back for the W.S. I took my son to Balduck. I've told him all of the horror stories how we used to run up and down that hill at least 8-10 times every time we practiced there for cross country. So when we stopped there he had to get out of the car and run up and down it to see. He came back huffin' & puffin'. For once, one of my Ward Cleaver stories actually played itself out. Got the whole thing on tape too. |

I'm assuming no one went to work today. How are you spending your snow day? We have a real blizzard up here. The snow is blowing sideways, probably 20-25 mph. Going to wrap presents & lay low. |

We've got about 8-9" here right now, and they're saying we're going to be in the 10"+ range by 4pm, so I'm holed up here. I just finished stringing the bead garland on the Christmas tree, and next I'll be crocheting the second half of a pair of mittens for my granddaughter. Hell, after that statement, I may as well sign up with AARP and be done with it. |
