You are correct on Joe's name.Joe was a wizard. I learned a lot from him.At the time of his death he was in a court battle with the City over an alert system he devised for C.A.D. Joe,Jimmie D ,Don Koch,Charlie Ziegenbein and Jim Mc Donald help us in making a video of the real Central Office.before the move to 1300 Beaubien. Chuckjav: Stay away from E.49. We have a superstition called "Kaled's Kurse".When John would mention a extra alarm there would be one.You mentioned 49. They had two working fires back to back.A little more trivia. Why is D.F.D. dispatch called Central Office ? Easy one. |

It sucks that the feed goes down half way through the month. I wish the person would just run it from like 6pm to 1am. |

I found this story in a 1970 Detroit "The Fire Fighter" I thought it was pretty funny and one that will never happen again.

I found the key to my firebox. Here is the inside workings. It would be hand wound and the notched wheel matches the box number, in this case it would be box 7-36. I believe it would act like a morse code and from what I recall watching it work on the firehouse end a tape would run a printout with the notch holes matching the 7-36, and then they would know which location the box was located.

It is with deep sadness that I report the death of my friend Charlie Ziegenbein, Chief of Communications (Ret.) Detroit Fire Department. There will be a memorial service for him at St. Mary's Church, Port Sanilac, Michigan, Saturday, 11/29/2008 at 11am. Charlie was a wonderful husband to Nancy, a great father and grandfather. He will be missed. |

Sorry to hear about the recent deaths. Those are great pictures Zitro! Can you hook it up to a battery to operate the little bell inside? |

I can manually trip it without a battery as it is coil wound. We used to keep it mounted on the back of our house and one time my mother saw one of my friends come in the yard through the alley and sneak up and pull it. She laughed so hard when it went off and he ran like like hell. I pass along my sympathy also to the recent passings. |

Buyamerican, sad news indeed.Thank you for posting. I don't think the Fund has it yet. Zitro: That box is in great shape. When a box was pulled, The circuit in C.O. would ding, flash and punch out the time and number on a large paper tape. The dispatcher would enter the number on the transmitter and send it out to the stations.I have my box mounted on my back door and connected to my door bell.People are afraid to pull it thinking it is active. I am having a devil of a time finding a picture of your dad.I knew him. Retired as Lt. of E.47. |

Just got my November issue of Unity, the publication of the RDPFFA. I noted that an old DFD friend, John Elliott, died in October. Any of you smoke eaters know him? There was no death notice in the Freep or News. John would have been about 72. He usually went by his middle name, Don. (Message edited by Ray1936 on December 06, 2008) |

Sorry to hear about John. I didn't know him. He had a short career with D.F.D. 16 years. Had the second best job in the Department. F.E.O. of Eng. Co. 39 . |
