GD, back in my day, you could kiss your baseball goodbye if you hit it into Mr. Gettow's[sp?] yard from the blacktop. Even if he wasn't outside to prevent you from retrieving it, you could never find it anyway in amongst the crops. His house was in the middle of your block, and his yard was like a small farm. I think it was a double lot. Remember him?

GD: Closer to Redmond. spent a lot of time on the black top with basketball or baseball. There may have been a few rubber balls or baseballs that landed in our near your back yard...but I swear no broken windows.

GD: Do you recall the Gotlers (sp?)on the south side of Fordham toward Rex...Dad was a fireman. There was a Tom and an older brother. They were active in football at SJ and I believe the older brother would have been around your age.

Welcome to the forum GD. 2 families I would like ask if you knew were the Carlin's or LaFata's. I believe they both lived on Forham in between Redmond and Rex.

GD: Concerning the Nike missile site...There is a post on the Heilmann thread in the Eastside Mega thread that said that before the Nike Missile site and the beginnings of Heilman that the area was an open land and was called Ford Garden.

7andKelly - The Cotteau's (Mary & Rennie) were
very nice people. They allowed me
to go in their garden to get the
"lost" balls for the other kids. I'd
go there for lunch once a week as a
kid...
Eastburn - No, but one was in the class of 59...
Kellyroad - Yes, the Gottliers (sp) had three
kids; oldest was Tom, then Jill and
Paul. Dad (Bob) was a fireman...
Zitro - Yes, the Carlin's lived on the north
side and the LaFata's lived on the
south side. Carlin's were closer to
Rex and LaFata's closer to Redmond.
Kellyroad - When I was younger the neighbors
always called it "The Ford Field"...

Glad to know they were nice. He must have just got a bad rap like the neighbor with the snow shovel from Home Alone.

I'm sure you remember the Krafa's, Skentnors, Edwards's and Mr. Shutie then too.

I remember playing rummy once with Fr. Ording at the Rapport Club across the alley too.

Eastburn---You may know my eldest sister Judy VH. She would have graduated in 58 or so and then went onto Dominican. Nancy VH, my second eldest would have graduated a year or so later from SJS and also went on to Dominican.

what kind of movie camera used those rolled up films in the plastic pop top holders? About the size of a roll of 50 cent pieces. I remember those at SJS.

I resemble that remark. BTW, the highest tech we ever got in the classroom at SJS during my tenure was a film strip projector. The fancier flicks had simulcast audio we played on suitcase players. Oh, and some of the cool nuns had those antenna-like telescopic pen pointers.

I remember the monotone voice of the narrator in those reels. When I got to eight grade, when it was close to graduation, about the last 3 or so months, they started showing movies on Fridays in room 100, that one that was right between the two sides of the school that separated the lower from the upper grades. I got to see Bless The Beasts And The Children and What Ever Happened To Baby Jane.

GD: Did you hang out on the black top? There were always kids wanting to play 500 baseball, strike out or just play one on one basketball or 21....all ages from 8 to 9 year olds to older teens. There were also many go-karts or minibikes that got a workout over there.
Tom Gotlier(sp?) was a couple of years older than me (Jill was my sister's friend) but he and several of the kids from Fordham, Eastwood, Saratoga and even Faircrest would engage in the game of Army. We all had our toy riffles and/or pistols, bikes. We'd break up into teams, separate, and try to find each other via sneak attacks. The whole triangle was in bounds. Later on when walkie-talkies were available we could communicate and give our various locations hoping to coordinate a sneak attack.....Those were indeed great days.

BTW, If you have any old photos of the neighborhood or St. Jude Parish, It would be great if you could copy them and either post them here or on the St. Jude Face book website

They invented it right around the time I was born. We were pretty rich so we always had fire in our cave.

I came across this forum and I saw my good friend Jim Mazzola was mentioned and to answer the question that was asked if he was called muzz. Indeed he was and is still called that to this day. Also Gary Trupiano lived over by Beaconsfield across from Harper Woods. I did graduate from St. Judes in 71 and Denby in 75 barely.

Welcome, SJ. Once you read all 8,000+ posts here you'll be fully up to speed. I think you'll enjoy yourself once you get used to the slightly off-center characters who populate this thread.

Boy. We can sure tell who's a little touchy here can't we? :>)

JC, I always think of you as a model of stability.

TS, I really don't know you well enough to insult you....yet.
