Neil & Penny, hope you had a good trip. I talked to Sug the other day and he said the weather wasn't cooperating very well.

Bentspur, you were pretty damn close. Are you near the St. Croix in Wi. or Min?

Old Guy, to answer your question (as briefly as I can). Charlie apparently had sold some grass to a couple of narcs someplace (not at the GarWood), and a few of Detroit's finest came down to the house with a warrant for his arrest. While they were there, they trashed peoples' rooms, waved their guns all over the place, then rounded up everyone at home that afternoon and took them downtown for "questioning". They dragged Natalie out of the shower, took stuff from peoples' rooms, and were just plain ornery. By the way, they did not find any controlled substances during that visit (thank God). I was just coming in from getting groceries and saw Larry up against the wall. He saw me walk in the tv room and motioned for me to get the hell out of there. As I turned around, there was a cop in the doorway. Oops!

So we all went downtown, and as we were told in the cop car, if we had no record or at least nothing outstanding, we would be released. They forgot to mention that the promised release would be the next morning. So we were all searched and put into various cells. I was the only one of the girls who had anyone to call, because Vic was at work and therefore not present for the "bust". I called him and he said don't worry I'll get you out. Nope. After the phone call I had no idea where anyone else was because they were all taken away by then. It wasn't till the next morning when they did cell check that I heard "Morgan" called on my right and "Clayburg" on my left. They gave us a stale donut and a broom to clean our cells before we left. The photo that someone has posted of Mark Swamburg on the balcony with a "Welcome Home" sign in cardboard was for the returning "7".

Anyway, that's my memory of it.

Hey Ya'll, had a little trouble sizing the photos, but thats the best we can do. Old guy, the weather at the AZ Ren. Faire '09 was like Woodstock '69. Plenty of mud to go slippin' and slidin' on. Penny took a video of me drummin' with the Ren. Faire Troup at the end of the day, but, I haven't got a clue on how to post it. I think I remember that day when the cops came to the Garwood. They threatened to shoot my dog "Crash" if she didn't stop barking. Besides that they didn't hassle me so I left with "Crash". Peace.

Neil
Seems to me I remember the lawyer William Kunstler sitting at the piano and playing.
also didn't Stoney and Charlie play guitars
Candy_man replied: As far as I remember Charlie & Stoney didn't play guitar.

Neil:
And who is that other lady in the picture with David and Rosalyn's kids at the piano,
I seem to recall something she was playing made everyone stop in their tracks and listen.
Maybe John Collier knows or Margie could ask D & R.

Beenthere.....if that was the "blind pig" bust you're talking about, the third guy might have been Fergie. Even though I was there, I can't remember who all got hooked up that night. It seems to me that Pete the electrician was involved in that melee. I know it was Fergie's lawyer that squared everything away for us.

Bentspur.....Jeep Capone lives in Minnetaqua (?).

Happy V-Day to all you sweethearts out there.

Whaler....read about that monster a while back. That thing has got to be at or near the top of the list of Big Boys' Toys.

RR...we used to watch the Garwood Trophy "Thunderboat" races from the Roostertail. Real close, real impressive and real loud!!

Hey Gash...look familiar?
'57Dietzmobile

Whaler, RR.....this sucker was anchored here in King Harbor while they shot the 3rd movie. The waterfront was a big clusterf#*k for about 6 weeks. Can do without Hollywood hangin' around. My little pirate buddy would have loved it though.
where's my little pirate?

Have not posted in a long time. Have not really kept up with the thread either so if I am repeating info already discussed, forgive me.

450 Keelson, the first stucco on the right heading toward Garwood was recently busted for being a sex group called the Hedonist Club. This was covered on a different thread so no major details here.

Some of you are interested in history so I thought I would share. The house is now for sale and the current realtor claims the house was once owned by the Purple Gang. Dead wrong. The original land deeds allows for no coloreds or Jews. For those not up on history the Purple Gang were Jewish. The original land deed also called for single family residences only and via a law suit, that is how you got evicted from the mansion.

Chuckles
You sure did miss something. Along with the hippies, druggies, dropouts and rock stars (and not just wannabees), there was a family of friends who cared deeply about each other. Some remained friends through the years - other fell out of touch but those feelings didn't dissappear. As is evident in this blog and by the reunion that is coming up, we still care about each other, we're friends, and some of us are still hippies, dropouts, and rock stars at heart. (I think the druggies have now converted to drugs like lipitor, viagra, HRP, and BP medicine)
Sorry you missed it Chuckles but I hope you are gettig some vicarious pleasure from reading the blog. Enjoy!

Hey Chuckless...you are correct in associating the Garwood Mansion with hippies, druggies, dropouts and wanna-be rock stars. Most, if not all of us, could easily fall into one or more of those catagories nearly 40 yrs ago. And Ruth makes a real good point about some of us remaining friends over the years. (re:post #132 2/15/09) It is interesting (to me) to note several things relating to the particular group of dropouts, wanna be rock stars, hippies, druggies, and other counter culturalists that were associated with the Garwood Mansion. A current "inventory" of some of the accomplishments and goals met by some Garwooders would read something like this:

a) several highly decorated Viet Nam War combat veterans
b) legendary; highly successful, accomplished musicians
c)dean/academic adviser at a major Big 10 university
d)masters/phd in drug counseling, anthropology, social work
e) personal/private director of entertainment for one of the wealthiest, most influential persons on this planet
f)successful/creative small business owner
g)major partner in a multi media production company in the UK w/world-wide projects ongoing
h)stylist to the stars
i)traveling artisans/craftsmen
j)incredibly talented, creative artists....more to come here
k)mechanical engineers approaching genius
l)blue water sailors, fresh water sailors, and maybe even a "buy me a drink, sailor?" or two.
m)retired folk with a house on a spread in the Tennessee hills
n)possible Hawaian beach bum (drool)
This list could go on and on but I want to remind you (us) that perhaps the greatest goal reached and the most sacred of accomplishments achieved by some of these "Garwood Mansion hippies, druggies, wanna be rockstars and dropouts" is that of raising a family. We have children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren. Hell, even I am a great-uncle to nine (count em) smaller type persons running around out there somewhere.
Your associative image of Garwood Mansioners is probably not yours alone. It is my guess that most people conjure up the same image when they hear or read the words Garwood Mansion; that is of course if they were around Detroit in the early 70s.I just wonder if any of those people could call up one of their old friends from let's say a car club or a social clique of some sort and announce a reunion and have 120 people+ (and growing) immediately set aside 3-5 days out of their otherwise normal/busy lives to travel (great distances in some cases) to a spot somwhere on the planet just to spend a few hours with some old friends.

No I am not crazy and I take no offense. Use logic if not fact, one day, everyone just took a walk and just handed the keys over to the bikers?

Yes there was a lawsuit. Manny Harris owned the property and leased it to a music promoter who in turn leased to or paid the lease for Stonefront. Things evolved or some might say devolved from there. I have my facts straight.

Personally, what went on at the mansion, I think was very fantastic. But admiring a period of time and reporting facts are two different things.

Manny went bankrupt and lawsuits take a long time in court. The original Grayhaven was a private development and had an association, this association existed well into the seventies, evoked the deed restriction for single family requirements and won in court.

I might miss minor details but my overview is essentially correct.

I love the history of Grayhaven but I feel no need to alter facts. In and of itself, it is an amazing little piece of this world. I am so so glad that so many got to enjoy the essence of the island and its surrounds.
