America's top 10 unhappiest cities By BusinessWeek The other kind of depression Some U.S. cities were depressed even before the economy went on life support. These were the cities that saw the highest depression and suicide rates even while the Dow Jones was climbing to 14,000 and Countrywide Financial was considered a respected mortgage lender. Why? Blame a variety of reasons, from divorce and crime to lousy weather and job loss. While that's bad enough, it will be important to see how these rankings change from this year to next. As the rest of the country struggles with the financial crisis, it is possible that some of these cities may soon become even unhappier..... http://realestate.msn.com//sli deshow.aspx?cp-documentid=1818 4152>1=35000 http://realestate.msn.com//art icle.aspx?cp-documentid=181825 23 Well at least Portland grabbed the #1 spot, not Detroit. |

Most Dangerous Cities of 2008 1 New Orleans, LA 2 Camden, NJ 3 Detroit, MI 4 St. Louis, MO While Morgan Quitno has a very flawed method of calculating whether a city is "dangerous" or not, the crime stats of St. Louis place it on par with those stats of Detroit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M organ_Quitno#Targeted_Cities_. 26_Metros |

Detroit's #4 ranking seems to be based on crime and unemployment. But out of 50 cities, Detroit was #50 for suicide and #46 for depression. Doesn't that seem to imply that in spite of high crime and high unemployment, Detroiters are optimistic and are not very unhappy at all? Or perhaps Detroiters are coping with the situation? Or have become desensitized or accepting of the situation? |
