My hubby and I fell in love with Detroit's Downtown and cheap housing. We have been planning on moving to the Detroit area. We've been scoping out the news, and the one deterrent to me so far is crime. What is wrong with these Metro Detroiters? The news stories all read like violence is a part of life. It is like a real life soap opera with guns. Another thing is I am completely disgusted with some of the comments made by the locals on other sites. Th Free Pres forums are by far the worst. An incomplete but disgusting list from February: February 2009 was a strange month for violent crime in Detroit. A recap of some this month's crime; 02-06-2009 "Snapped", Outer Drive and Southfield Freeway: The man who led police on a high speed chase after they responded to a DUI call. They did alcohol, drugs, and had sex. When the man was done, he was robbed, forced into the basement. In the basement, he had his teeth knocked out, was tied up with extension cords, and shot in the knee. you get what you pay for. if this stuff freaks you out, move to the middle of nowhere. not just out in the boonies, but so far from civilization that meth-dealing is impractical due to lack of population density. |

Shadesofbleu- granted crime can be bad but unless you're buying sex selling drugs or bootleg booze or otherwise being involved in questionable activites I wouldn't let the crime reports deter me from what I wanted to do. Crime does affect us all to a degree, but not a lot of it is random. |

Shadesofbleu I'm not going to lie, in my 51 years living in Detroit. I have had my cars/trucks broken into more times then I can count, but I have never been the victim of a violent crime. |

I think it is fair to say so long as you are on the straight and narrow, your chance of being a victim of violent crime is still very low in Detroit (though perhaps higher than some other cities), but that your chance of being a victim of a property crime is fairly high. |

A few tips to living in the city: 1) Don't initiate drunken police chases. 2) Don't argue with irrational, armed people. 3) Don't hire prostitutes or 'escorts' or whatever you want to call them. 4) Have you ever been accused of killing a man? 5) Don't eat at Eddie's, I guess, and don't start fires. 6) Again, don't argue with irrational, armed people. 7) Don't steal from liquor stores. 8) Do not ever, under any circumstances, repeatedly urinate on buildings. 9) Are you really worried about your ex-wrestling coach? Apart from that?... Move into an established neighborhood with an engaged neighborhood association. Keep your car clutter free, buy wheel locks, and use the Club. Does that help any? |

Rochester, Sterling Heights and Ferndale are not Detroit. None of the cited events were in downtown Detroit, so if you are going by the news you posted, you should still be OK to move downtown. I can vouch for living with sense here. Follow Barebrain's rules and you should be able to stay out of trouble. |

I would think that a cursory examination of a months worth of news stories from any big American city would turn up about the same amount of similar stuff. |

If you are interested in downtown city proper, it's among the safest in the country according to a few groups. I've lived in Lafayette Park, Indian Village, and Joe Berry and also have friends who live and I visit frequently in Midtown, Corktown, and my new favorite, Palmer Park (but that's not near downtown, but the houses are excellent and the people are too). All great neighborhoods. Usually the crime is caused by one or a few idiots in these places; and many of my friends report that police response is improving, slowly but surely. It's living in a city - so you need to keep your head up - but DO follow the advice above and keep yourself out of stupid situations. If you're at an after-hours bar, for instance, you're participating in something that has a higher probability of something going down. And Sterling Heights and Rochester are VERY far away from downtown. We as a region are VERY sprawled out - it's near 35-45 minutes away depending on traffic. |

None of those things happened in downtown detroit. I tend to find it funny when someone mentions some crime happening in Detroit and then I say, "that happened closer to your place then mine". If a murder happens on the east side, it's probably happening closer to Grosse Pointe than downtown. A robbery near 8 Mile, closer to Ferndale than downtown. Carjacking off the Southfield Freeway, next stop Dearborn. If you fell in love with downtown detroit people posting on freep boards (the lowest common denominator) should not deter you. that's like letting the terrorists win. |

Notice that not a single one of those events took place downtown. That probably tells you what most people here on the forum already know, downtown Detroit is a really safe place! Enjoy your move to the D. You will love living downtown. |

Well I can see both sides of this. What where they thinking when they planned to move to Detroit? You get cheap often interesting housing and cool summers in return for high crime and high taxes. On the other hand this is worse than most other cities, and even those in the average US city will be abit taken aback by a full list of crimes for the month. |

If you want to get a small picture of crime IN Detoilet you can check this site:http://www.spotcrime.com/mi/de troit It seems as though the Official DPD site has not updated it data in a while. http://www.detroitmi.gov/Depar tments/PoliceDepartment/CrimeS tatistics/tabid/1189/Default.a spx "Detroit is a really safe place! Enjoy your move to the D. You will love living downtown." Yes please do come to live here . The larger the herd of sheep , the less your(err, our) chances of being a repeat victim of crime. Besides the resident LL's always welcome new unstreetwise prey. |
