I'm still bummed about the closing of a diner, called Valkoff's, that used to be on Antoinette between Cass and Second. I'm one of those people who has a problem with Letting Go. |

Thats what happens when we give corporations to much power and complain that workers make too much money or that their jobs arent important enough to keep in this country. Or, on the other hand, workers that dont attend Union meetings and make demands and complain that "the union sold us out" or care more about what kind of dress Beyonce is wearing or who gets voted off American Idol, than voting for worker friendly third party candidates in Congress and rallying and starting mass movements. You would be surprised at how many 'poor exlploited workers' work off the clock (because they are scared boo hoo) and work two jobs yet dont take breaks they are entitled too take. Ive worked union-non union retail; small shops; I managed, was a sales rep and it seems like there is a lot more immaturity and airheaded adolescence on the part of working men and women in this country as compared when I first entered the work force back in the early eighties. |

Ravine, Wasn't that restaurant on Antoinette called simply The Balkan Restaurant? Or was it "Valkoff's Balkan Restaurant?" In any case, it had great chicken paprikash. Didn't it close about 30 years ago? |

A lot of those same chains are closing down here also. Guess that's a bit of a bright spot, it isn't just Detroit |

There is no positive news about our Metro-Detroit retails. If our economy turns around then we could see new retail popping up like mushrooms. Until then let's go shop it some G-Mart, buy a cheap soylent green products and call it a day. |

Kind of a waste to include Circuit City, Linens 'n Things, and KB Toys, since all of their stores have closed everywhere, not just metro Detroit. And Steak and Ale closed all corporate-owned stores; only a very few franchise locations (none around here) remain. If we're going to include all the chain-store operations in these lists, by the end of 2009 we'll have to ask Lowell to buy a bigger hard drive to store such information. I suspect some big and venerable names will not live out the year. Buy local whenever you can! It keeps the size of the list down. |

Macknwarren, that's the one. They had that teeny little sign over the door, remember? I think it identified the place as "Valkoff's" AND "Balkan restaurant." Open-faced hot turkey sammich with mashed potatoes and gravy. Yummers. Thirty years ago sounds about right. |

It wasn't due to the economy, but all of the La Shish restaurants closed due to the owner's misdeeds. I feel sorry for the employees. I never had bad service in a La Shish Restaurant. |
