Good question! I can't even think of a single place in Detroit that sells/serves it. I make a killer carrot cake but not very often, I hate shredding the carrots. Zingerman's Bakeshop in Ann Arbor sells whole carrot cakes (2 different sizes) - they are expensive, like everything else Zingerman's makes. But absolutely delicious. Even better is the Hummingbird Cake. My teeth ache just thinking of it, but in a good way. Jeez, now I'm hungry! |

I don't know the name, but the bakery in the Eastern Market, on the corner of Russell and Mack has a wonderful carrot cake. You can order them whole or buy the slice. |

That would be the Milano bakery...I never had anything from them that was poorly done, their brownies are to die for...maybe literally! |

Stikine, haven't had Josefs carrot cake, but if it's like their other cakes, Black Forest Torte, Chocolate Mousse Torte, Rum Torte, etc.. then you are right! |

Sweet Lorraine's has some decent carrot cake. Granted it's not like I try carrot cake all around town but that was the last place I had it and it was pretty good- as is with most things Sweet Lorraine's. |

If we are moving out from the city, Pasquale's on Woodward and 13 and Pronto on Washington in Royal Oak both have really good carrot cake. I give the edge to Pasquale's. Oops, I forgot, Sweet Lorraine is downtown. Sorry for going off topic. (Red face) (Message edited by gazhekwe on March 22, 2009) |

My carrot cake beats them all. I use baby food carrots to enhance the flavor of the grated carrots. |

Izzy's - on Harper between 8-9 Mile Rds. But that restaurant has closed recently and I don't think the bakery across the street ever opened. Heard maybe Izzy's is opening another restaurant at 13 and Little Mack. |

Definately have to second the Sweet Lorraine's recommendation. Kind of expensive but worth every bite if you're looking for only top notch cake. Also, the portions are huge! |

Heh, yeah...it took me until 23 to even TRY it. Happened on my first flight, too...and with pre-packaged and slightly-stale commercial stuff. I was apparently SO happily surprised by it, at least three of my neighbors volunteered theirs...probably to quiet my gleeful praise over the damn stuff! I've almost sampled pumpkin pie...avoided it for the same reason, especially while there remain perfectly good chocolates willing to die for my dessert pie filling and cakes...and I was BORN on Thanksgiving. Cheers |

Awrey's. They have an outlet store on Farmington Rd., between Plymouth and Schoolcraft in Livonia. It might be in supermarkets, too. Their carrot cake is tasty and inexpensive. |
