"She has been relentless in going after this, and by all accounts they shouldn't have gotten it," says Doug Rothwell, president of Detroit Renaissance,"... http://www.detnews.com/article /20090328/SPECIAL02/903280337 I thought he was supposed to be a booster? I've heard a rumor that he was on the Comerica board and voted for the move to Dallas. Can anyone confirm this? |

He follows that statement with a compliment to her: "She just wouldn't let it go, and that's solely due to her leadership." |

That's great he acknowledges Lou Anna K. Simon's tenacity. But the issue is the fact that Rothwell thinks the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams shouldn't be at MSU. |

No, that's not a fact. The article is nothing but positive, including his quote. Even taking it out of context, as you have, there is no way a reasonable reader is going to think that there's actually controversy here. What he is saying is that the odds were incredibly long, which is what the whole article is about. As in, "by all accounts, it seemed natural the project would land at one of the department's own prestigious national laboratories." Everything after the comma in that quote is from the lede of the story but you could substitute that for what he said and the meaning would be the same. |

I haven't taken his quote out of context. Here's the full quote put together, "She has been relentless in going after this, and by all accounts they shouldn't have gotten it. She just wouldn't let it go, and that's solely due to her leadership." Rothwell essentially said MSU should not have gotten the facility, and would not have gotten the facility, if it wasn't for Simon's lobbying. I hope he doesn't share that confidence with the rest of the world. Basically, his point is similiar to those who don't want the facility at MSU. That's not a good position for someone who is supposed to be boosting the state. Can anyone confirm the vote on the HQ move? |

"...and by all accounts they shouldn't have gotten it..." The phrase "by all accounts" means "according to what everyone says," or "by all of the accounts that everyone tells." What he is saying is that everyone said MSU should not have gotten the project, but Simon's leadership skills overcame what everyone believed. He is giving her high praise, and is not commenting on whether he believed the project should go to MSU. |
